Selecting the Right Gym or Fitness Center: 7 Factors to Consider

Mary Moss
Joining a gym is a large financial commitment. Finding the "right" gym is crucial in determining whether or not you'll go to the gym week after week. With swim suit season on the horizon, men and women are probably thinking about how they need to tone up and slim down.

What should you look for when selecting a gym that fits your needs and style? Sparkpeople.com has compiled a checklist to help find a gym that will match your unique personality and motivate you to keep going back.

They suggest you set up a tour of the gym(s) or fitness facility you are considering joining. Arrange the tour around the time you would typically work out so you can get a feel for the environment and availability of the equipment you'll be using.

Selecting the right gym factor #1: Location

Once you've toured the facility(ies) and decide whether you would be comfortable working out there, locationis probably the most crucial factor in determining your sticking with a fitness routine! If the gym isn't in your neighborhood or on your way to/from work, you'll find all kinds of reasons it's inconvenient to go.

Selecting the right gym factor #2: Hours of Operation

Another key factor to consider when selecting a gym or fitness center is the hours of operation. I didn't join a gym several years ago--the one I really wanted to join--because they didn't open early enough for me to work out before work.

Selecting the right gym factor #3: Members

The other members in the gym can impact your willingness to go. Do you want a co-ed setting? Do you prefer single-sex members? Will you be comfortable exercising around the current members? Do they seem to have the same fitness goals you have?

Selecting the right gym factor #4: Staff

When selecting a gym or fitness center, remember that the staffand their training and attitude can make or break your success. Do you want staff certified in particular areas? Do you want a personal trainer? What are the rates? These questions are important in determining whether or not a particular gym is a good fit. When selecting a gym it's important to observe staff in action. Do you like the personalities of the staff? Do they seem willing to assist clients?

Selecting the right gym factor #4: Cleanliness

Make sure disinfectant and towels are available to wipe off the equipment after each use at each gym or fitness center you are considering. Cleanlinessof the equiqment, locker rooms and restrooms are something you may not notice initially, but once you join, be sure to check this out. Let the gym or fitness center management know if "housekeeping" is not acceptable.

Selecting the right gym factor #5: Equipment

What equipment is available at the gym or fitness center you're considering? Is there adequate equipment to meet the demand of the members? Is there a sign up sheet or waiting list? Is there a time limit on the equipment you're most likely to use?

Selecting the right gym factor #6: Classes

Are a variety of classes available at time convenient to your schedule at the gym or fitness center that suits your other other criteria? Who leads the classes? How many gym members are in each class? Are the classes offered multiple times at the gym?

Selecting the right gym factor #7: Cost

Last, but not least, is the cost of membership at the gym or fitness center! Is there a one-time application or registration fee? What are the monthly fees? Are you locked in to a long-term contract? Check all the terms and fine print before you sign up.
