Selecting the Top Five 2010 SUVs Based on Resale Value

When it comes to purchasing a new or used car one of the top things on a buyer's mind would be the future resale value of the vehicle that they would like to purchase. The high cost of owning an SUV has little to no bearing on this factor, so when you look at model pricing you can usually guarantee a better resale value if you stick with the basics.

When you consider the options on specific vehicles, do not select the top or bottom of the barrel, as you can do much better on things like four wheel drive versus two wheel.

MrTechnical's Five 2010 SUV models that have historically kept a high resale value:

1) Jeep Wrangler Sport, 4 wheel drive.
Starting at $21,165 these machines are almost impossible to destroy. With four wheel drive, a 3.8 Liter 205 Horsepower V6 engine that gives 15 mpg in the city, and 19 mpg in the city. This model is typically a real deal because of its low entry level pricing, plus these historically hold resale values very well.

2) Kia Sportage LX 4WD.
Starting at $16,996 MSRP. Powered by a tough little 2.0 Liter four cylinder engine with 140 horsepower that gets great fuel economy at 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway! A four year old Sportage is currently selling for somewhere between $6,500 and $11,500. Depending on options and the cars location this can vary widely.

3) Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV.
Starting at $19,099 MSRP. Suzuki has been making great little SUV's for the American car market ever since they introduced cars like the Suzuki Sidekick. Now they make more upscale models yet they remain committed to keeping the "Base Models" affordable. This SUV has a 2.4 Liter four cylinder engine that gets 166 horsepower and gets 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

Based on resale data collected from specifications of other models, A four year old Grand Vitara could fetch upwards of 50% of its original value, but since this model is newer there is no historical resale data out there to compare yet. I am going on a feeling based in facts from other sales.

4) Subaru Forester, 2.5X AWD.
Starting at $20,295 MSRP. The Forester Comes with a zippy little "Horizontally Opposed" 2.5 Liter engine that nets 170 horsepower and gets 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg highway. Resale prices range from $11,000 to
$17,500 for a three year old car.

5) Honda Element, FWD.
Starting at $20,525 MSRP. This is one of the most reliable cars on the road today. Running a 2.4 Liter four cylinder engine that yields 166 horsepower and gets 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. This car has only increased in popularity and if anyone ever has one for sale it tends to sell really fast. Resale values for a four year old Honda Element are going for $9,000 to $14,500.

So the main point is since there are plenty of SUVs and crossover vehicles to choose from then the resale can be sketchy at best. So remember to shop wisely and ask your salesman where they see the resale values on your particular model.
