Selena Gomez and Other Role Models for Teen Girls

Kyra Lennon

Actress Leighton Meester has recently expressed her admiration for her "Monte Carlo" co-star Selena Gomez. In an interview with PopEater, Meester said, "She's the most amazing role model. She'll have full on conversations with her fans - but they're 6-year-olds. She is just so wonderful with them." Who can argue with the "Gossip Girl" star's assessment? The six Teen Choice Awards Selena Gomez has been nominated for speak for themselves. As if that weren't enough, she is also dating every teenage girl's dream guy Justin Bieber! There is no denying, she's got it all!

Role models for teenage girls are few and far between in these days when skimpy outfits and sexy videos are the norm. The good news is, there are some young female celebrities who have found their way to stardom in a much more classy way.

Taylor Swift

Country singer Taylor Swift is a true example of someone who takes her career seriously. Her drive and ambition made her one of the top artists on the country music scene before the age of 20. While many young starlets let fame go to their heads, Swift still enjoys the simple things in life, like quilts and her old car! Someone with such focus at a young age is an excellent role model for teens and tweens alike.

Shay Mitchell

From the moment the "Pretty Little Liars" actress burst onto our screens in 2010, it was clear that Shay Mitchell was destined to do great things. The Canadian beauty plays Emily Fields, a gay high school student who faced much prejudice about coming out in the small town of Rosewood. Her on-screen character prompted her to get involved with the Trevor Project, a charity aimed at preventing suicide in lesbian, gay, bi, transgender and questioning youngsters. There is no better idol than someone who actively participates in helping others.

Emma Watson

Not only is Emma Watson an actress, she is also a fully-fledged fashionista with millions of admirers. Although her style and career are certainly impressive, it's her academic achievements that make her someone to aspire to. Miss Watson took a leaf out of Hermione Granger's book, and put her education first. Even though the bright lights of Hollywood were beckoning her, she chose to put that on hold and gain herself some qualifications.

Not all young female celebrities are interested in making headlines for being outrageous. Some just want to make the most of the opportunities they have been given. These stars are excellent examples, and are great role models for teens and tweens.

Better role models than I had as a teen, which were Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Oh well, they're singers, not really role models. Just like most teen idols aren't trying to be role models- they're trying to be singers and actors
