Self-Employed as a Single Mom

One might ask how hard is it to be Self Employed and make ends meet. One might even ponder at the response. "I have done it for 7 years with 2 little ones and I never know when I am going to be paid!" I am a Self-employed work from home mother of two little ones ages six and three. I own two companies that are strictly commission based. How does one do it? I will tell you, I have always dreamed of working for myself since the high school years and when the opportunity to stop sitting behind someone else's desk and making them rich entered my life I ran for the door. Not without thinking about it for many nights to come but with due time I knew it was the opportunity to leave my career of twelve years of working long hours with great benefits and excellent guaranteed income and enter a field I knew nothing about. Why? It's like that perfect pair of jeans at the store that our mother didn't buy for us all those years ago and so when we got our little paychecks we had our best friends mother take us back to the mall to purchase them and they were gone. I was single with no children and young and figured why not go for it. It has been a long seven years and I look forward to many more years.

I started my own company in 2000 and have since grown to a team of twenty-five team members and a second company with us working between four major cities in our state. At times I never know when I will get paid as it's a straight commission position and yet I am responsible for three mouths to feed. Times have been tough over the years, but I wouldn't change it for the world. My children and I have a wonderful life and I am always available for them which is more important to me than anything else. I'll admit when I first started the first company I thought the High Life, the riches but of course with having two children since that beginning my ideas changed. Not about having the Wealth that remains the same but it's the definition that changed. Wealth for me is not measured in numbers it's measured in the fortune that I have gained. The independence of working for myself from home, having a top team working with me, having two children to always be there for that is True Wealth. There were many people in the beginning of my first few years that told me to just give it up and go back to working at my last employer and get back the good benefits. Every time someone told me that it was more power for me to make sure I made this work. Being Self-employed has it's challenges, being self employed as a single mom has it's adventures but I never gave up on my dreams or of finding those jeans. I will continue to work behind my desk with the best benefits as I work for myself and my children and there is no greater benefit than that.

For everyone that has a dream but is stuck in that 'comfort zone' and isn't sure if and when to get out. The time is when you have no more doubts and have made the list of what you are leaving behind and comparing it to the longer list of what you would be gaining. We are never too young, too old, too single or too involved to do what's best for ourselves. Your dream can only be reality if you make it and you wouldn't have went back for those jeans if you hadn't wanted them in the first place. So don't wait make your dreams your reality and good luck! You won't fail if you don't try and you will succeed if you never give up. -Self employed as a person who's fortunate enough to be a single mom.
