Self Exams for Men

Women are taught the importance of breast self examinations from an early age. Organizations like the Feel Your Boobies Foundation have taken the embarrassment out of the topic as far as women are concerned, but what about the guys. Men who have a family history of breast, prostate, or testicular cancer, or those who carry certain genes have a higher risk for developing these types of cancers.

Early detection of cancer can be the most important weapon that you can possess, it can also mean the difference between life and death. Chances for survival decrease the longer that cancer is left unchecked.

Male breast exams, like the female counterpart should be performed on a monthly basis. Starting male breast exams early will serve to acquaint you with your normal breast so that if any changes occur, they will be obvious to you.

The most convenient place to perform a self examination of the breast is in the shower, as the water will serve as a lubricant, easing the movement of your fingers. With one arm placed behind your head, use the other hand to slowly, in a circular motion examine the entire area of the breast. Gently squeeze the nipple to determine the presence of discharge or other abnormalities. Repeat this process on the other side. After the shower, it is also advisable to visually examine both breasts in the mirror to determine skin changes and symmetry.

Testicular self exams should also be performed on a monthly basis to detect testicular cancer. The shower is also the best place to perform this self exam as well because the scrotum will be relaxed at this time.

Begin the testicular self examination by locating a testicle gently with your fingers, hold it firmly while using the other hand to feel the entire surface of the testicle. Repeat the examination on the other side, taking note of any lumps or other abnormalities.

A prostate self exam can also be performed in the shower. A rubber glove with some lubrication can aid in the examination. While standing, insert the tip of one finger into the rectum. The prostate is a gland that is located at the base of the bladder and is easily examined. It should feel firm, but not hard. The prostate should be about the size of a walnut, if it is enlarged, it could indicate a serious condition. If you are having trouble with the self examination of the prostate, it may be pertinent to enlist the aid of a partner for the examination.

The self exams are not meant to be a replacement for regular, scheduled exams by your physician. If you determine anything abnormal, or have any questions, it is imperative that you discuss your findings with your physician. All major studies have shown an increase in survival rates if breast, prostate, and testicular cancers are found early.
