Self Help Books - How to Make Them Work for You

Elodie
Thousands upon thousands of self-help titles are published yearly. A search for 'self-help books' on Amazon.com alone, yielded a whopping 158,842 titles! So now that the internet has given you unlimited access to the 'world of self help', you may be challenged by how to choose your content or to make sense of what you are learning.

Most self-help articles or books present themselves optimistically, speaking directly to you, the reader. While some make promises, others merely imply that they have the ability to help you live a fuller life or improve your specific situation.

Ideally, self-help content should be used as a tool for the extension of information, direction and support. Here are a few fast facts that may help you approach your book...

1) Selection: The most important thing to remember when selecting your self-help content is not to waste time with anything that promises unrealistic, super-speedy results.

2) Be sensible: If a particular book or article speaks to you - read on, if it doesn't fit your life or your situation, then your read will not be constructive.

3) Be cautious: You should approach self-help content with a critical eye.

So if you've ever read a highly recommended self help article or title and you still felt that you did not receive the promised results, don't be too quick to discard potentially valuable information.

It is important to reflect on why you may have attained that particular outcome. The problem may not necessarily start with you. In fact the most common cause of failure lies within the method that one adopts when reading.

Most 'successful readers' find that making use of a reading system works astonishingly. While everyone has their own schedule, it may be worthwhile to try and incorporate some of these tips into your reading system:

1) Be disciplined: Set aside about an hour per day exclusively for your self-help reading. It is further suggested to stick to the same time each day i.e. 6am-7am daily.

2) Make it easy: Read your book with breaks per chapter. For each chapter, make yourself a set of notes. Pulling out what appeals to you the most, and writing or typing it out in plain language.

3) Re-read: For the sake of motivation, it is important to go back to your notes and re-read them. Do this every 3 days.

Well now that you have come this far, your system alone will do wonders for your self-development. So the next time that you read any self-help content, remember that the way to improvement starts with the self!
