So just what is self improvement? Self improvement is a broad, generic label that can be applied to a variety of different topics. Self improvement, also called personal development and self help can include:
- Leadership skills
- Visualization skills
- Time management
- Goal setting
- Mind power
- Organizational skills
Self improvement is really anything that teaches us to develop and strengthen any aspect of our lives that we'd like to change.
Self improvement is vitally important because, through our own efforts and actions, we can learn to recognize and then realize our fullest potential. We can learn a new, more positive way to think about ourselves, others and our lives. Self improvement is important because it teaches us to change that old, negative self-talk into something that is positive, strengthening and life affirming.
What self improvement is not is a quick fix or cure for any of our weaknesses, disappointments or feelings of failure. If we are going to successfully improve our lives, we have to be dedicated and persevere in meeting our goals. Only through taking small, sequential steps will we be able to reap the benefits of our unique strengths and talents.
In order to begin to realize our fullest potential, we need to devise and implement a self improvement plan. This plan is simply a specific goal and what steps we can take to reach that goal.
There are an almost infinite variety of self improvement materials and products available for purchase. But all we have to do, to begin our self improvement plan, is to pick one thing in our life that we'd like to change. Try some of these tips to start you on your self improvement journey:
- When you choose what you want to change in your life, write it down. That's your first self improvement goal.
- Learn to recognize your negative thoughts, self-talk and behaviors. Make a note of these and then re-write the negativity into a positive affirmation. You can memorize your new affirmations, repeat them to yourself or print them on index cards and place them where you'll see them frequently.
- State your goal aloud. It might sound like talking to yourself, but speaking out loud, gives power and affirmation to your thoughts.
- Study the characteristics of people around you. Perhaps there are positive characteristics that you could learn and implement into your own life.
- Set a deadline to achieve your goal. This motivates you to keep working on your self improvement plan.
- Practice your change, consciously and consistently, everyday for 30 days. After 30 days, that change has become a habit and will happen automatically and naturally.
- As you work on your self improvement plan, make a note of every positive change. Giving yourself acknowledgment and positive feedback will keep you motivated and focused on your goal.
- Once you've accomplished one self improvement goal, set another.
The need to continually improve ourselves is basic to all human beings. Self improvement allows us to reach our true and fullest potential. Through self improvement we become better able to understand ourselves, others, the world around us and to make positive changes in that world.
