"Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion" - Emile Coue

Did Affirmations Spin-off from Conscious Autosuggestion?

Emile Coue, author of "Self Mastery through Conscious Autosuggestion" was called the Prophet of Autosuggestion. Coue was a French psychologist and pharmacist who lived from 1859-1926.

His book is out of copyright and you may print in its' entirety from various on-line sources.

You may be more familiar with the term "affirmation" than "conscious autosuggestion". Coue's autosuggestion, "Day by day, in every way, I'm getting better and better," has been tweaked by masters and prophets who came after him, such as Norman Vincent Peale and Robert H. Schuller.

The Force Within Us

Emile Coue's teachings are based on the premise there is a force within us for a marvelous and incalculable power, which can produce best or worst results. It can bring health to the sick, the erring and guide us into the correct path.

The force is the enormous power of imagination.

On Remembering

On remembering, Coue provides the common example of trying to remember a person's name. The more we try to remember, the more it eludes us.

By substituting, "I shall remember in a minute," for the usual, "I have forgotten," the name will come without effort.
About Will

He refers to a drunk and a criminal, who believe they are forced to do what they do because they cannot imagine any way to prevent themselves from doing it. Coue writes, "We are so proud of our will, we believe we are free to act as we like".

He concurs we remain "wretched puppets" until we learn to guide our imagination.

Suggestion and Autosuggestion

Actually, the self can be controlled as easily as an unbroken horse with suggestion and autosuggestion.

Coue defines suggestion as the act of imposing ideas on the brain of another person, which by the way really doesn't exist. You can make a suggestion to someone but unless they transform it to autosuggestion, it will not produce a result.

Autosuggestion is quite simply: if something is possible, you can persuade unconscious that you can do it. And, you will do it, despite the difficulty level.

Unconscious is Source of Illness and Cure

Believing that our unconscious mind is the source of many illnesses, the unconscious mind can also serve as the cure.

Coue advises to make this type autosuggestion, "Such and such a thing is going to disappear or such and such a thing is coming to pass".

Then, let your unconscious mind work on the autosuggestion and be astonished to find that the thought come to pass. Coue states that every illness can yield to autosuggestion, but does not always - because people must be taught to practice correct autosuggestion.

Experimental Teaching Procedure

Coue taught patients correct curative suggestion through a series of intensive experiments. He advocated that autosuggestion can be a dangerous instrument, one that can wound or kill if handled improperly. Alternatively, knowing the correct way to use autosuggestion can save your life. He cautioned that people who can't learn or are unwilling to understand cannot practice correct autosuggestion.

How Autosuggestion Works

According to Coue, "the unconscious self is the grand director of all our functions". So that if a certain body organ is not functioning correctly, we must make an autosuggestion for it to perform its function well. The order is transmitted and the organ obeys "with docility" immediately or little by little returns to its normal functioning. All autosuggestions should be issued in a monotone.

Power in Repetition

We are instructed to tie twenty knots in a string. Then, in your monotonous voice repeat this general autosuggestion twenty times, as you count off the knots: "Every day, in every respect, I am getting better and better".

"Self Mastery through Conscious Autosuggestion" by Emile Coue

Be mindful of Emile Coue's teachings - we possess within us a force of incalculable power where we can be anything, do anything as long as it's doable.
