Self Motivation Techniques for Everyone

Tom Koziol
Everything we do in life is governed by numbers. We go to work at a certain hour, come hour at a certain hour, get paid on a certain day of the month, etc, etc. Therefore it should come as no surprise that we can motivate ourselves by the numbers.

For example, we could adapt a five step program or a four step approach or live our lives by 3 simple rules. It is my contention no matter how many numbers we have in our self motivational program number one wil be the same in all of them.

I believe the number one step to motivating ourselves is to truly decide we want to do whatever the act is we believe will launch us. In other words, number one will be a declarative statement to the effect that you will do such and such.

By way of example, I looked at myself in the mirror and decided I had more belly than any human being actually needed to carry with him everywhere he went. I made the decision to reduce my middle circumference by four pant sizes as my number one step.

I also went one step further. I committed to that statement. Without commitment there can be no number one in anyone's program.

NUmber two, I set down a time frame and diet and exercise program that I knew I could follow. I didn't set unrealistic goals for myself nor did I start swallowing all those diet offerings you see on TV. I determined those were simply substitutes for an actual workable program.

This article isn't about losing weight,it is about motivation. I use weight because it contains all the ingredients self motivation requires from the participant. Simply substitute whatever it is you want out of motivation for weight. Your program will then parallel these steps.

Number three, I instituted a plan of action. I looked at what I was eating and decided what was leaving the food pantry and what was staying. In other words, I changed my face stuffing patterns with not only the food I was putting into it but the amount and type.

Number four, I created exercise routines I knew would help my reduction plans as well as keep me interested in performing them over a long period of time. We all know how boring the same exercise routine can get. Truth is, it gets so mundane some people quit exercising altogether.

Number five, I monitored my program on a daily basis. I made sure my food regimen was both diverse and not sabotaging my other efforts. To put it another way, I kept evaluating and re-evaluating my food intake so I wouldn't be exercising like a mad man to no avail.

Number six, when I reached my goal, I gave myself a reward. It doesn't matter what the reward actually is so long as it doesn't destroy your success. Rewards are good things and should be indulged in at personally acceptable intervals.

Notice the common threads regardless of why you are motivating yourself. You have to make the decision you will do something. Next you have to commit to doing it and then you have to devise a plan or the means to get it done.

Self motivation is actually that easy. Reality says many of us will fall off the wagon for one reason or another during the process. So what is what I say.

You can always start over. After all, it is called self motivation. That means you are motivating you and you can start your timeline at any point you so desire. The fact of the matter is you can also start it as many times as it takes. There isn't any rule or law that says just because you are on your fourth start you will automatically fail.

People are people and all kinds of events befall them. You might have to restart your self motivation program three or four times before all of the circumstances in your life align to open your motivation window.

Remember, everything we do in life is governed by numbers. Given this is true, successful self motivation is only a matter of minutes away. Make a decision now and get started on your personal self motivational trip.
