Self Priming Paint Makes Painting Your House on a Budget Even Easier

Eric Loveday
There are many projects that can be done around your house on a tight budget. Home owners with limited means can still tackle many home improvement projects ranging from painting to installing hardwood floors, to putting in new granite tiles countertops. But as has been said before, there is perhaps no home improvement project more budget friendly than painting and now there are even more ways to save while changing the color of a room or freshening up the exterior of your home with fresh paint.

Painting a room will dramatically change its appearance. You can freshen a room up with paint, you can add a distinct look through faux painting techniques, you can give a new mood to a room, and you can create nearly any custom look you desire through the use of paint.

On the outside, your can paint trim or siding and give your home distinct curb appeal.

Now through a breakthrough in paint design, you can do it for even less than before.

In the past, when you decided to paint a room or the exterior of your home, the only correct way to do it was to go out and purchase primer and paint. The primer would be used to coat the walls or trim and get them ready for the fresh coat of paint. Yes many people skipped this step, but the result could be flaking paint, poor coverage, or worse. Primer assured adhesion, but it was not cheap. Usually primer was comparable in price to the gallon of paint. At about $20 a gallon for primer, it added considerably to the cost of the job and this is why many skipped the step.

Now, things are changing and new paints are out that combined both primer and paint into one. The tests are in, and it actually works as well as the traditional primer paint method. The best part is, these paints cost about the same as a gallon of regular paint, which results in significant savings on any paint project. Yes, primer paints have been around for about 10 years now, but their performance was inadequate until now. The new group of self priming paints perform as well as regular paints while eliminating both the cost and time of applying a separate primer and paint.

The primer paint combos are available from many of the big paint companies including Valspar through their line called Valspar Ultra Premium Duramax at a price of about $33 per gallon, also through Behr and their line called Behr Premium Plus Ultra at a price of about $35 per gallon, and through Sherwin Williams and their line called Sherwin Williams Duration at a price of about $43 per gallon.

The paint types listed above are actually exterior paints, but interior versions are or will soon be available through the manufacturers listed above.

This type of paint is perfect for homeowners on a tight budget. They offer a savings of both time and money compared to the traditional primer and paint job and everyone wants to save both time and money.

So next time you decide to paint, consider one the self priming paints and puts the money you save towards your next home improvement project.
