Self Proclaimed Hacker Known as Th3j35t3r on Twitter Claims Wikileaks DDOS Attack Responsibility

Th3j35t3r Must Obviously Be a Masterful Hacker If He's Taking Credit for the Wikileaks DDOS on Twitter

Rob Korczak

A "hacker" claims to be the one to have perpetrated the attack on the Wikileaks.org servers for some altruistic and patriotic reasons.

The "hacker" in question calls himself "The Jester" though he spells his name in "1337 5p3ak" or for those of you who don't speak nerd " Leet Speak" which stands for elite speak. Basically it is an intermingling of numbers that look like letter intermingled with actual letters to spell out words.

So this so called "hacker" who goes by the name of "th3j35t3r" (The Jester) is taking responsibility for the Wikileaks attacks as well as several other targets which he/she claims are Al Qaeda websites.

Th3j35t3r said on Twitter that "www.wikileaks.org--TANGO DOWN--for attempting to endanger the lives of our troops, 'other assets' & foreign relations,"

He later stated that, "PS for me personally WL is a sideshow target. I am more interested in the big jihad recruiting and training sites," reported ABC News.

However I think that this th3j35t3r person is simply seeking attention and had nothing or very little to do with the attack on Wikileaks.org

I know about hackers and hacking and firstly, a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is NOT hacking. Not in the strictest use of the term at least.

Secondly, th3j35t3r, by taking credit for the attacks, is basically admitting to having created or having access to a bot-net. As I described in a previous article, a bot-net is where small programs are incidentally downloaded by unsuspecting users and these little bits of computer code allow the creator to take control of that users machine and have it join in on a virtual computer army that bombards an Internet server with requests that will never be completed. In this way, a bot-net can bring an Internet server to a crawl.

The problem here is that a bot-net is highly illegal and anyone who does have one will surely not be dumb enough to boast about it on twitter.

It's true that there are any number of available bot-nets out there and they range in size from just a few computers to a few thousand computers. An effective bot-net will have a larger number of computers and a weaker one will conversely have less effect on a DDOS target.

So here we are, th3j35t3r claiming to be DDOS'ing wikileaks and posting this information on twitter?

If he truly has the ability to temporarily cripple a website the size of wikileaks then he has a sizable bot-net and a sizable bot-net can be worth tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Personally I think that "th3j35t3r" is a wannabe script kiddie who figured that he'll claim responsibility in order to have several thousand people start following him on twitter. It's a boost to a basement dwellers ego.

From the sound of things, "th3j35t3r" is a phony, as he doesn't even know how to spell things in 1337 (leet) if you look at his "name" he completely forgets to use the letter 7 which is interchangeable with the alphabetic letter "T".

He is in no way credible and he's taking a lot of risks in hopes of getting attention but he may end up getting the wrong type of attention from the FBI.

It's true that wikileaks doesn't have a whole lot of vocal friends right now but the law is the law and "The Jester" or "th3j35t3r", if you prefer, is going to end up with Federal agents asking him over 9000 questions. Telling the Fed's that he said it for the "lulz" just won't cut it.

As for the press that may wish to print the story as is, they will find their story has turned out to be a red herring.

Sorry to dash your hopes folks, but them's the breaks and congratulations to ABC News for doing their research and making this guy famous. He just played you like a violin.

  • ABC just got played by a fake hacker claiming the fantastical on Twitter.
  • th3j35t3r doesn't actually know "leet speak" or he would have spelled his handle correctly.
  • Hope that th3j35t3r used some proxies to use that Twitter account or he'll be visited by Fed's
In order to pull off a DDOS attack singlehandedly you need to own or have access to a bot-net. In other words you have to hijack the computer of countless innocent people and this is highly illegal.

Let me just say that if he WAS with the NSA then he no longer is. The NSA would never allow one of theirs to brag on Twitter about an operation.

I'm telling you guys, this guy is a complete fraud .

and if he isn't the NSA, I have a feeling that he will get a job offer soon. if he IS legit.

  • Zach12/9/2010

Actually he doesn't use a botnet as far as we know. He claims to use a specially crafted tool named XerXes or something of that nature that enables him to perform DoS NOT DDoS (according to him there is no "distribution" involved) and he can apparently take down most websites for an indefinite amount of time in under a minute. Also, the top theory right now is that "he" is the NSA.
