Self-examination

Daniel  Zimmermannski

Let a man himself examine

Ere he come to be God's guest,

Ere he break his spirit's famine

With the wafers God hath blessed.

Ask not whether thou art worthy --

That indeed shall never be!

Dust thou art, thy nature earthy;

From all merit thou art free.

Rather ask if thou perceivest

All the blessings of God's grace.

His true body thou receivest;

His true blood revives thy face.

In a very special way;

Grasp with joy the gifts thus proffered;

Greet the dawn of pardon's day.

Whoso with his heart believeth

And partaketh with delight

In a worthy way receiveth

God's own Supper's holy light.
