Selkirk Rex Cats: Breed Profile

Curly Coated Cats with Sweet, Patient Personalities

Jacqueline Parks
History: The ancestor the Selkirk Rex breed of cat was a curly haired kitten in a shelter in Montana. A Persian breeder took the kitten home to her Wyoming cattery and bred it with one of her Persians. The resulting litter had both curly haired and straight haired kittens showing that the curly hair gene was dominant. This breeder, along with others, continued working with these curly haired cats, using Exotics and British Shorthairs as well as Persians as cross breeds, to develop the Selkirk Rex breed that we have today. This breed was named after the breeder's step father making it the only cat breed named after a person.

The Selkirk Rex breed was accepted for Championship status by the Cat Fanciers' Association in the year 2000.

Appearance: The distinguishing characteristic of the Selkirk Rex cat is its curly coat. The coat of the Selkirk Rex cat can be either shorthaired or longhaired, but it is always curly. The curls grow bunchy in loose ringlets. The coat is curliest in the ruff area and on the tummy. It can be any color or pattern.

The Selkirk Rex is a heavy, sturdy cat with a rectangular body that is not too long nor too short. The legs and tail are both large and long but in proportion to the body. The head is round with rounded ears and a rounded muzzle that blend well with the overall shape and size of the head. The eyes are also round and large and can come in any color. The whiskers mimic the coat in their curliness. This is a massive cat. There is no fragility about it.

Personality: Selkirk Rex cats are known for their patient and calm natures. They do well with both children and other pets. This breed exhibits a wonderful adaptability to new situations. They are sweet and affectionate but do not require as much attention as some other breeds.

Care: Like all cats, the Selkirk Rex breed needs a continual supply of fresh water, a high quality cat food, and a clean litter box. Adequate veterinary care and safe places to scratch are also necessary to their well being. The Selkirk Rex is a hardy cat with high resistance to disease. This breed should have daily grooming sessions to keep its special coat in top condition. Use a soft brush and brush gently to retain the natural curl. Occasional bathing will also be necessary. Make sure you use a low residue shampoo. Shampoos that are designed to coat and condition the fur will weigh down the curls. A low residue shampoo followed by a thorough rinsing will keep the unique coat of the Selkirk Rex looking its best.
