Selling on Amazon Vs. EBay: Pros and Cons

Chris Jones
Amazon is a great place to sell your textbooks and other higher-priced items. However, Amazon is not so great for selling small items and cheap books. The advantage of selling using Amazon is that you do not have to pay a listing fee, which eBay charges. However, the disadvantage of Amazon is that they charge more commission fees to use their service. That is why you should use Amazon to sell larger items because you will be charged less than if you were selling a 5 dollar book.

Ebay is great for selling cheaper items because the listing fees are so little. They only charge you 35 cents to list an item that is up to 9.99. Starting off listings at .99 only cost 15 cents! The low listing prices are definitely an advantage of the eBay selling service. The disadvantage is that eBay also charges a percentage of the final selling price as commission. This fee varies depending on the item. Thus, eBay is good for selling cheap to moderately priced items, but Amazon is definitely the best way to sell expensive items.

Selling on Amazon, however, has the disadvantage of not selling. Sometimes, you can list an item on Amazon for weeks or months and no one will buy it. On the other hand, the advantage of eBay is that there are millions of buyers from across the world constantly searching the eBay databases for items that they want. If you have a time constraint on selling your item, I would suggest using the eBay service. The advantage of eBay is that it allows buyers to bid on the item. After the bids accumulate, you will receive the profit at a buyer friendly price.

Another disadvantage of Amazon is that they have set shipping prices. Often, this shipping price does not cover the actual shipping costs. Instead, the 3.49 shipping credit does not even cover the commission fees that Amazon charges. As a result, you should consider the advantages of selling on eBay. eBay allows you to set your own shipping price, which you can include a small handling fee if necessary. This is beneficial to sellers who have to package the item with special material to prevent shipping damage.

While both Amazon and eBay are exceptional selling services available online, each one has advantages and disadvantages. You should research them carefully to ensure that you get the maximum profit. Why settle for any less?

My biggest problem with selling on Amazon.com is no seller protection. You pay a commission to Amazon.com every time you sell something but they don't have your back if something goes wrong. If you sell an item on Amazon.com, the buyer can file a chargeback to their credit card company even though they received the item. The buyer could be a typical scam artist but they have the credit card company backing them. Amazon.com will only forward the information you give them to the credit card company in your defense. In my case, tracking information and emails proving the buyer received the item were meaningless to Amazon.com and the buyer's credit card company. Buyer got the item for free, the credit company got their money back, and amazon.com didn't lose a cent from the transaction (seller loses the money for selling the item). EBay and PayPal have always refunded me money for a scamming buyer if I have proof the item was shipped. EBay and Amazon are a tossup on commission fees
