How to get the clothes:
Most of us are familiar with getting used clothing from our own children's closets, garage sales or thrift/consignment stores. These are EXCELLENT sources and I still make weekly visits to my local thrifts, but this is NOT how I pay my bills. I have 2 sources that have supplied me with an endless supply of quality used kids clothes that I pay next to nothing for!
Local Moms - I get calls weekly to pick up clothing from other moms in my area. This kind of arrangement is priceless!I Here's how I do it: I'll start with a conversation (at daycare, school, gym, karate etc.) with another mom and of course the topic turns to what I "do". I tell them I own an online consignment store that specializing in second hand children's clothing. This usually gets their attention. I give them my card and tell them I will pay cash for their kids outgrown clothes (while making a compliment on their child's adorable outfit!). When I go to look at their items, I will pick out some excellent items I know will sell, then make an offer. Usually this is not more than $1-$2 an outfit. I will say something like "I'll give you $30 for all of these over here, or $50 to take it all." Usually moms are just ready to see it go and take the money! Then they tell a friend how they made a little cash and word of mouth gets around.
Most people wonder if these mom's ever get offended if I offer a "low" amount. Well, in my town there are NO consignment or resale type shops. If these moms want cash for their clothes - they have only 2 options: Have a garage sale or sell it on eBay. I give them a 3rd option which is the one with the least effort.
Ads and Flyer's - I have gotten an even better response from small ads in the free weekly paper or flyer's. The key is how you word it. Always say CASH paid immediately and try to solve a problem. Here are 2 I've used recently:
Closets overflowing with clothes your children have outgrown or no longer wear? I will pay you CASH for your child's used clothing!
OR
Need extra spending money for Christmas? I pay CASH immediately for your child's outgrown clothes!
This method will get the phone ringing. Once you have a few "good" clients....you can stop advertising. I mean, kids don't stop growing, so these parents will continue to call each season!
Even though I have 100's of auctions on three id's at any given time by no means am I an expert at this, but this has worked in my community for over 5 years! So many moms know me as the "clothes lady" that I don' have to hand out cards anymore, they simply find me!
