Selling on Denver Craigslist

How I Sold My Pop-Up Camper in 1 Day

Anna
We all have "stuff" and at some point we have to sell the old "stuff" to make way for the new "stuff" unless we want our lives to become "overstuffed." That, my friend, is where craigslist makes a much needed appearance. Craigslist is an on-line community consisting of classified ads ranging anywhere from jobs, housing rentals, personals and childcare to the buying and selling of goods, social networking groups and discussion forums . Whatever you are looking for you are bound to find it on craigslist. This article, however, is going to focus solely on keys that will make you a successful seller on craigslist.

Even for a novice user of the computer and internet, craigslist can be used with relative ease. For example, I live near Denver so Denver craigslist is the site that I use. Just replace Denver with the name of your city or town and the craigslist nearest your location will come up. From here, you can began the process of posting an ad in their classifieds. Craigslist will walk you through the process in an easy to understand, step by step fashion but here a few valuable ideas you might want to keep in mind when posting.

Make sure you carefully select the category you want to place your ad under so that you receive maximum visits to your ad. Their might be two categories that your item would fit under so think about which category you would go to first if you were looking for the item that you were selling. Let's say you are trying to sell some gently used baby clothes. Well, you could place it under the category "clothing and accessories" or you could place it under "baby and kid stuff." Most people who are looking to buy baby clothes are going to look under the latter category. You might also garner more interest from people, not necessarily looking for baby clothes, but who are now interested in what you have to offer because they were perusing the "baby and kid stuff" category. Therefore, it is important to chose your category wisely.

Price, price, price. Price your items well. Look through craigslist and see what similar items are priced at and always check to see what your item could be sold for if bought new. This tip also comes in handy when you are negotiating a purchase with someone. Last year I was in the process of buying an elliptical machine. I found one for $200.00 and I believed it to be a good deal, however, upon further investigation I found that I could buy an new one of that exact model for $210.00. The elliptical I was interested in was a couple of years old and had been used many times. Needless to say, I was able to get the price reduced quite drastically. If you over price people will pass right by your ad and if you under price you are missing out on some extra money in pocket. Craigslist is not like a garage sale, you can actually get a fair price for your items.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Pictures are what really sell your items on craigslist. Make sure that you take quality photos. When we sold our pop-up camper and treadmill we did several things to insure a good photo. We got our items in selling shape. We cleaned them up, wiped them down and made minor repairs if needed. We took close-up and distant photos. Make sure that people can really see what it is you are selling. Don't take pictures with a lot of clutter within eyesight. People are more apt to buy something if they see that it has been taken well care of and clutter is usually an indicator that it hasn't been. So don't take a picture of a treadmill with clothes draped over the handles and a pile of magazines on the track.

Wording. Clarity is key here. Put all necessary information, year, mileage, accessories, etc, in your advertisement. The more people can find out about your item without having to e-mail you with a question every ten minutes the better off you are. Say you are selling a fleece jacket. Well, you could post "fleece for sale" but you are going to get a lot of e-mails with a lot of questions about what kind of fleece it is but if you let people know that it is a ten year old North Face fleece then you will only get inquires from those interested in your ten year old North face fleece. On a side note here, I must tell you that there is a lot of e-mail interaction with craigslist but your actual e-mail is never posted to the site. People do not have access to that information.

Craigslist is a great way to sell your "stuff" for a good price but there are some things to be leery of as well. Never accept cashiers checks or money orders and never wire money to anyone, EVER! Accept only cash and never deal with anyone who is not willing to meet with you personally. I have had many "inquiries" from people telling me that they want to buy my product immediately but cannot meet me in person. They ask me to e-mail them my name, address, etc and in return they will send me a cashiers check. THIS IS A SCAM and can lead to some serious financial consequences.

Selling on Craigslist can be a great way to get rid of any unnecessary items and make a little cash. Follow the tips above and your ad will surely stand out above the rest. Happy selling!
