When you think about the most popular websites, what comes to mind? Google? Yahoo? Ebay? With Myspace being as popular as it is, it's no wonder some Einstein came up with the idea of selling a Myspace account ON Ebay! Myspace is free to join so it makes you contemplate on how anyone can make a profit out of his or her account. Well, it's easy.
Visit Ebay and type in "Myspace account" in the search for bids. I currently have done so and the results were 7 items for auction and the prices went as high as $2,600.00. I didn't misplace the decimal, guys. That's the actual bid for the highest offer that went to an "I Love New York" profile. The second highest price went to a "Hogan Knows Best" profile. I want to cue you guys into the reason why people are selling Myspace accounts.
It's good for marketing purposes. The target buyers are websites, companies, and bands. Websites can use the myspace profile for advertising purposes; companies can use it to sell their products; and bands can use it to promote their upcoming albums and tours. If you have only a few hundred friends, your profile most likely won't sell. You must have at least 10,000 friends to receive a good price. This isn't against the terms of Myspace either, so it's perfectly legit. The only people really paying for this would be the friends on the myspace page if they're not too fond of the spam in their bulletins. But who reads those anyway?
I've heard both good and bad points on this scheme and most of the time I've heard people claiming it to be someone's desperate attempt to making money. Maybe so but have you been to the forums lately? Have you checked your inbox messages? Most messages and posts are those of spammers and bots. Myspace started out as a site to promote bands and get their names out in the local scene. It wasn't intended for personal use. It simply formed into this microcosm of online dating, reconnections with old friends, and popularity contests.
So, is selling a Myspace account really desperation or is it a smart way to make money while not breaking the rules? After all, advertising WAS Tom's goal!
