There are way too many acronyms for search engine advertising and not enough continuity!
We need coherent solutions, encompassing all disciplines to achieve significant results on this competitive SEM, SEO, SER now how about 'SEA' for 'search engine advertising' landscape.
Adding to the problem is the constant change: now the race is on to provide the best 'feed' on a topic; to be come established as an expert online by coming up on very broad searches like 'Internet advertising specialist' for a chosen topic.
Nobody wants to do business with the low-tech Realtor, the 'old style' Dentist or anything or anyone who may be using an outdated technology or skill set. Search Engine Placement (Gee! I guess you could call that 'SEP'!) is now greatly affected by the 'freshness' of the data; the race is on to be the source of the best human edited 'feed' on a topic.
380,000+ 'Cousin Vinny' web-designers (self proclaimed website designers) need to get a 'streaming source' of fresh data to promote the websites they build if they are to have any placement at all; so the providers of that data are in the power seat.
By providing a reliable source of correct human edited CONTENT for websites (human edited data), a self publisher or self proclaimed expert can prove it on all the search engines, find an audience; even achieve fame with only an internet connection and the right setup if they are well accepted by the world, because the world is reachable (at least the 'world' as it pertains to people who search online for a targeted search term)
Just as I can tell you how to achieve search placement for a chosen set of key words; a targeted search phrase: search engine placement can be achieved on purpose: but the competition is heating up, and, increasingly, longevity is a factor!
