Sen. Obama: Lay Off My Wife

Mary E. Coe
Sen. Obama's wife, Michelle Obama, became a target and ads were put on the internet after she went before the mike and made the statement, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country"

Sen. Obama came to his wife rescue and defended her. Sen Obama said: "Lay off my wife". I appreciate the fact that Sen. Obama defended his wife. He looked good on TV defending Michelle Obama. I love it when a man defends his wife. But, on the other hand, Michelle Obama has got to be careful of what she says. She is a public figure. The public, the Media and the Republican Party are going to listen carefully to everything she says. When she put herself out there and makes speeches before thinking, she's going to be scrutinized. She's going to become fair game.

Personally, I don't believe she meant it the way it came out. Her husband was doing so well and she was probably overwhelmed and caught up in the moment. However, her husband is a presidential candidate and she is in the public eyes. She needs to be careful.

Should the spouse of a presidential candidate be fair game? Naturally, we are going to be concerned about what type of person the first lady or husband of the president is. But, should one party go after another party's spouse or grown children about petty things? I don't think so. I believe we should leave the petty things alone.

So, they go after Michelle Obama for petty things. What kind of skeleton does Sen. McCain's wife have, if any? We are all familiar with Bill Clinton. What I'm trying to say is; if one spouse becomes fair game for petty things, all the other spouses may become fair games for petty things. We don't need the distractions. We need to stay focused on the real issues and the candidates. We don't want to get side tracked. We want to remain focused on the important things.

It is important for the spouse of a presidential candidate to be proud of America. I believe Michelle Obama is proud of America. I know the words came out of her mouth. I just don't think she meant it the way a lot of people interpret it. However, Michelle Obama has to remember that what she says matters. She is out there in the public eyes and she is fair game.

He needs to be more aware that he's now in the public eye, and if he's planning on being president his family is going to be in the public eye as well. If she's by his side during this campaign, she's going to get some of the garbage that goes along with it as well.

Every member of the family that goes public with support is fair game. Even candidate's pets have become part of the frey.

What did she say leading up to the comment. I forget now~I did read the transcript~and media forgets all the great stuff she says and pulls out the bit that they wanted to use against her. I guess there are people who are proud of the way some of our troops torture other human beings and slaughters innocent children and babies in Iraq; but stuff like that horrifies me. So does all this socially acceptable Muslim hatred. She did not say she was not ever proud of the USA, but "really proud". She was talking about how citizens were out registering voters and getting "engaged" in the process of government. I am sure she has learned a lesson about being in the public eye and needing to think how she phrases things.
