Senate Fails to Vote on Dream Act 2010

The US Senate failed to follow-up yesterday's house passage of the Dream Act 2010 with a vote today, likely delaying Senate action on the bill until next week if it gets heard at all.

Fox News quoted a Senior Democratic aide who said that the Senate is expected to vote on the House-passed legislation next week.

"We still hope to consider it before we leave," a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told Fox News .

The Dream Act would carve out a path to legalization for hundreds of thousands of foreign-born youngsters brought to this country illegally. It is an effort to try and legalize the children of illegal aliens, in an attempt not to punish them for their parents' actions.

The Dream - or Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors - Act would make illegal immigrants brought to the US before they were 16 years old eligible for citizenship. To qualify, individuals would have to have been in the country at least five years and enter the military or pursue a college education.

Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who was the target of pressure from demonstrators at her district offices, says she will vote against the legislation despite backing an earlier version. Hutchinson has said changes made in the bill have caused it to become too broad and apply to too many immigrants.

"I will not support the Dream Act legislation brought before the Senate because it expands the scope of the bill beyond the intended individuals who were brought here as children and grew up and were educated in the US," Hutchison said Wednesday.

No one knows if the Senate Democrats can muster the 60 votes necessary to pass the Dream Act 2010 next week.
