Aside from the Finance Committee, Grassley serves on the Judiciary, Budget, Agriculture Committees, as well as the Joint Committee on Taxation. He is a member of the International Narcotics Control Caucus, the Holocaust Memorial Council and the Congressional Caucus on Hong Kong.
He has been an assembly line worker as well as a farmer. He was born and raised in Iowa, even attending Iowa State University. He has deep roots within his constituency.
Grassley is a member of The Family, which organizes the National Prayer Breakfast.
Senator Grassley does not favor overly expensive and excessive governmental spending on projects. He is one of only two Republican senators to vote against the first Gulf War in 1991. He favors holding the Executive Branch of government accountable in terms of finance and the judiciary.
The senator was not in favor of the proposed immigration legislation put forth in 2007. He voted against the Immigration Reform Amendment, the Immigration Reform Act of 2007 and the General Immigration Bill.
With regards to the War with Iraq, he voted in favor of giving President Bush authorization to wage war. Since then he has remained a supporter of remaining in Iraq by voting against the Troop Redeployment Amendment, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill of 2007 with Iraq Withdrawal Timeline (which placed conditions on the supplemental, including a timeline for withdrawal), Restrictions on Troop Deployment (which would maintain lengths of time between returned deployment) and the recent Iraq Redeployment Amendment within 120 days.
Upon news of President Bush's favored troop surge, Grassley posted this quote on his website, "I understand the skepticism and apprehension among Americans. But, we also can't forget that we expect the government to protect us from another 9-11, and that means dismantling terrorist networks and activities in Iraq and around the world for the sake of our own security" basically equating the September 11th attacks with the danger posed by Iraq.
Grassley voted for the USA Patriot Act in 2001, and has since voted for its reauthorization. He voted down the Security of Cargo Containers Amendment and the Rail and Transit Security Amendment.
Senator Grassley voted against the Hate Crimes Bill and voted for the Same Sex Marriage Resolution. Voting against the Stem Cell Research Act as well as the previous Stem Cell Research Bill.
Senator Chuck Grassley is up for reelection in 2011.

Post a CommentSenate Report card on Grassley recently: "F." Read the piece I posted following his appearance on "Meet the Press" and/or the one listing some of his more outrageous and out-of-it quotes. As one of his Democratic opponents (although not the one most likely to win the June 8th Democratic primary) said, "It's time to rotate the crops after 51...58 at the end of this term...years, as every good farmer knows." (paraphrased). Conlin is only 5 to 9% points behind him if she is the D. nominee, but her war chest is 2 million lighter than Grassley's, because he is sixth in accepting PAC money(s) out of the entire U.S. Senate. Blocked progress on Health Care. Not a "real" farmer any more. Older than any of the challengers. Time to retire and join Arlen Specter, perhaps.
Dear Drew: Senator Grassley is beginning to become increasingly an old poop who should move on down the road. While his fiscal conservative streak is pure Iowa and is not something to criticize, his current position in "stalling" on the reform of Health Care and making misleading statements around the state of Iowa about "pulling the plug on Grandma" caused a major state paper (The Quad City Times) to suggest that it might be time for him to move on down the road. I liked your story. It confirms the impression(s) I have of Senator Grassley from reading his opinons and watchng his latest posturing on national news shows. You might enjoy the piece I just did on Grassley, in view of the research you so obviously put in. Good job.
