Senator Boxer: Climate Gate Scandal E-Mail Hacking 'a Criminal Matter'
According to The Hill, Senator Boxer believes that the hacking of the e-mails from the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit is a "criminal matter" worthy of investigation of the United States Senate and will be part of any hearings conducted by her committee. The ranking Republican on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator James Inhofe, has asked that hearings be conducted into accusations of wide spread attempts by climate scientists to manipulate and hide data that casts doubt on human caused global warming and to suppress the views of skeptics.
Some observers would seem to be taken aback at the priorities expressed by Senator Boxer over the climate-gate scandal. On the one hand there is the suggestion that science fraud is being employed to cause world governments to impose draconian measures to reduce carbon emissions in order to alleviate a climate change problem that actually may not exist to the tune of trillions of dollars. One the other hand there is the theft of e-mails and other documents from a research center that would seem to indicate that fraud is taking place. It seems curious that Senator Boxer would focus like a laser beam on the latter and not the former. Also what jurisdiction the United States Senate has over a computer hacking operation that took place in the United Kingdom is unclear.
It is likely that Senator Boxer's committee may have a great deal of oversight duties to before concerning climate-gate. NASA is about to be sued by Chris Horner of the Competitive Enterprise Institute for raw data on the Earth's temperature gathered by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), directed by the controversial scientist and political activist Jim Hansen.
Rules concerning the regulation of carbon emissions being considered by the Environmental Protection Agency are being called into question because they are based on reports delivered by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The IPCC is in turn heavily influenced by scientists named in the e-mails from the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit as having engaged in data suppression and fraud.
Senator Barbara Boxer is a great believer in global warming, largely because it provides an excuse for the expansion of government of which she is an even bigger believer. Senator Boxer will almost certainly not like pursuing the climate gate scandal that had the potential to undermine both of those things. But, as the climate gate scandal grows and spreads, she may not have a choice.

Then in the light of how they have reselected and resmoothed the trends, they will claim to reveal a truth which their 'opponents' have concealed. So they will pick a high point from, the past and a low point from the present, draw a straight line and then say 'look, we told you, temperature is falling'. To be caught doing this is that to which the columnist Mr Monbiot should be directing effort. To be defending these people doing this in any measure is if anything to be even more culpable than doing it. The row that has generated over the theft of Phil Jones emails and data and the re/treatments of this data borders on bathos, but the successful call by the columnist George Monbiot for the resignation of Mr Jones actually goes the full mile. He's right there - yes, actually within the borders and in the laager at full-blown bathos.
If you look at the comparison of the temperature data sets up now on the Hadley Centre websites comparing HADCRU NOAAA and GISS [1800-2008] they are not identical - they are indepedently done by each institution - but the fit between all three is in broad terms as good as identical: - they all demonstrate a constantly rising trend-average over the period. The idea that Phil Jones manipulated any of this is risible - he didn't need to, the signal is so strong.
Not true for 'flat-earth' objectors however. For them, if they ever even bother to look at the data sets, they will and do say its a fraud. The truth here is that whatever is selected and however it is treated, all of this can be judged ignorantly and even maliciously after-the-fact by third parties as involving 'bias' by virtue of what they will choose to say has been deselected. Then in the light of how they have reselected and resmoothed the trends, they will claim to reveal a truth which their 'opponents' have concealed. S
Illegal hacking is an issue and should be dealt with under the law - but 'the issue' here, as I see it, is this: -
There are two features of data-management, especially in this global context, that require 'selection' and 'smoothing' [averaging] for detecting signal within noise. Anyone who has actually made an attempt to manage data on this scale knows this and that it raises genuine difficulties in the data-gathering and treatment for all and any of the people who become involved in doing this: -
1. globally averaging 'anything' - let-alone global temperature - is a monumental challenge [where do you get the data, how do get the data, to what height, what depth, what resolution do you go in a multi-medium bio/geo/cryo/oceano-sphere etc over which you have very limited access?]
2. long-term trend-behaviour, that again involves averaging, but over some period of time that again by definition requires 'selection' and 'smoothing' [do you select 10 years, 100 or a 1,000,000].

Protest the inaccuracy and Fraud
I believe the Copenhagen Treaty Summit should be cancelled! How in God's name can this be considered a legal contract when a Huge Amount of the basis for the Climate Change Data has been found to be Fraudulently Sabotaged and absolutely Inaccurate? This is signing an agreement Document that has no Legal Foundation of Realistic conditions or elements due to inaccurate and Manipulated Data as described and therefore, anything stated on this Copenhagen Treaty Document should be considered Null and Void! Why create a Pandora's Box, subject to Lawsuits and Misgivings due to total inaccuracy of Scientific measurements? Which now is proving to be the case! This Treaty has no Legal ground to stand on and is and will be a False Document from day one!
Any lawyers want to help out by filing this Copenhagen Treaty be classified as an illegal Treaty!

That's funny, I don't remember barbara boxer calling for an investigation when someone hacked Sarah Palin's personal email and released those emails to the media? I guess she missed that story huh?
