Senator Harry Reid Links Domestic Abuse to Unemployment

Ms. Marie
Nevada's Senator Reid's statements have created a buzz, and many believe he used an issue as serious as Domestic Violence to push an agenda. He has every right to his beliefs and opinions, however to make the statements he did on the Senate Floor to support a bill to create jobs was outrageous.

Two things he said are simply unsubstantiated, and ignorant. Reid's comments were, "Men, when they're out of work, tend to become abusive." And he also stated, "...women aren't abusive, most of the time." For a Senator to make comments like these while on the Senate Floor makes one wonder if he [Senator Harry Reid] is truly ignorant about the facts concerning domestic abuse, or if he thinks the public would fall for his underhanded tactics to support the bill to create jobs.

Domestic abuse should not be tauted as a reason or excuse why men may become abusive. To say that is to stereo-type abusive men in a sense. Is Harry Reid implying that when a man is doing well financially they are less likely to be abusive? Rich men abuse women, for example, the highest paid sitcom actor, Charlie Sheen, star of "Two and a Half Men" allegedly threatened his wife's life during a domestic dispute.

Abuse is usually about control, and there is no excuse or "reason" for anyone to resort to domestic violence. It is a shame that a person in such a position would mislead the public, and yes Nevada's Senator Harry Reid links domestic abuse to unemployment with those ridiculous comments.

Although, men are less likely to report domestic abuse than women, there are reports and studies that indicate there is a rise in cases of women abusing men. Men are abused by women all the time, and to say that women aren't abusive, most of the time is to minimize the seriousness of domestic violence against men. To learn more about abusive women and their personality traits read Battered Men and Abusive Women.

One study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found that in non-reciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases. Senator Reid should get the facts straight about domestic violence because there is no data to confirm his comments, nor are there any studies, research, statistics [that the author has found] that link domestic abuse to unemployment.
