We came across packages of Seneca Crispy Apple Chips in a variety of flavors to try. These were on sale for $2.00 for a 3 oz. package, not the most frugal purchase, however it seemed like a quality product that was somewhat healthy, as far as packaged snacks go. We decided upon the Caramel Flavored Seneca Crispy Apple Chips after seeing that the sugar content was basically the same with each flavor. The nutrients for this product break down as follows:
Serving Size: 1 oz.
Calories: 140
Fat: 7g
Saturated Fat: 0.5g
Trans Fat: 0g
Cholesterol: 0mg
Sodium: 15mg
Potassium: 85mg
Total Carbohydrate: 20g
Dietary Fiber: 2g
Sugar: 11g
Protein: 0g
Vitamin C: 30%
The bag claims that the 7g of fat are less than the total fat found in an average serving size of potato chips, or 10g of fat. I was pleased to see that the sugar content was low as well as the sodium for these crispy apple chips. For those who are watching their blood pressure the low sodium teamed with the potassium are great for lowering their numbers.
Now it was time for the taste test. The bag was easy to open as the bag came with a slit at the top of the bag for easy ripping. The Seneca Crispy Apple Chips looked delicious with visible "sugar" and most of the apple chips had a light brown coloring to them. The first bite into the apple chip revealed a subtle sweetness like you would find when eating a real apple. However I found that the caramel flavor of these Seneca Crispy Apple Chips was lacking and overpowered by the sweet taste of apple. The apple chips have a slight crunch to them though not quite comparable to the crunchiness of potato chips.
Overall I have enjoyed the Seneca Crispy Apple Chips, though it is unlikely that I will purchase the caramel flavor again. Lucky for me the apple chips come in a variety of flavors including: Original, Cinnamon, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Sour. I would rate the Caramel Flavored Seneca Crispy Apple Chips an 8 out of 10. I would give these apple chips a perfect score had the caramel flavor been more detectable. You will likely find this product in the produce section of your grocery store.
Ingredients for the Seneca Crispy Apple Chips, Caramel Flavor, are as follows: Apples, safflower, sunflower, and/or canola oil, corn syrup, sugar, maltodextrin, modified corn starch, citric acid, ascorbic acid (vitamin c), natural flavor, and caramel color.
