Seneca Wallace Traded to Cleveland Browns from Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks Traded Quarterback Seneca Wallace to Cleveland for a Draft Pick

Seneca Wallace was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Cleveland Browns on Monday. The Seneca Wallace trade gets Cleveland another quarterback, and makes it seem like the Browns could be heading in a new direction to start the 2010 campaign. Wallace had been serving as the Seahawks back-up quarterback for the past few years, taking over for Matt Hasselbeck quite frequently when the Seahawks starting quarterback went down with injuries. In the Seahawks offense, Wallace was also used as a wide receiver at times as they tried to take full advantage of his speed and great hands on the football field any chance that they could get.

The trade between Cleveland and Seattle sends Wallace to the Browns for an undisclosed 2011 NFL Draft pick. The rumor is that this pick will be determined by how much playing time that Seneca Wallace gets with the Browns in 2010, and that it could be a fifth round or better pick for Seattle no matter what. For Cleveland, this reunited Mike Holmgren with a quarterback that he drafted out of Iowa State and gives him someone familiar on the Browns roster. It is also a very familiar move by Holmgren, because when he took over as the head coach for the Seattle Seahawks he made a trade with Green Bay to send over Matt Hasselbeck, whom he had drafted while coaching Green Bay.

It's unclear if the Browns and Holmgren want to use Wallace as a full time quarterback, or if they plan to adjust him to being a wide receiver in the next season. He is only 29 and is ready to show what he can do in the NFL, so maybe Holmgren really thought it was time to give him that full time shot. Since being drafted into the NFL, Wallace has played in five seasons, posting 3,547 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions during that time. He has only started 14 games during his NFL career, but he definitely has the tools if he can be put behind a nice offensive line. For Seattle, this trade most likely means that they will be going for a quarterback in the 2010 NFL Draft to replace Wallace as soon as possible.
