Senior Citizen's Discounts

I Am Now Officially in My Golden Years

Banner Kidd
I am officially a senior citizen. Last night I was eligible to receive the senior citizen discount at Ponderosa Restaurant. Aside from getting a cup of coffee for a few cents less at McDonald's and getting my meal a few cents cheaper at many restaurants, what comes with these golden years? While there are advantages to the senior life, all is not to bask in.

The young girls don't look at me like they used to, or at least how I thought they looked at me. I've already passed the days when I was looked at as a father figure. With my white hair, even though I'm only 55, I've become a grandfatherly type in the eyes of the young ladies. Now that messes with me. Nowadays, when I catch a young lady giving me the eye it is no longer that they think I'm a hip young prospect! No, no, no! They looking out for me, hoping I don't fall and break my hip!

Instead of MTV and VHI I find myself highly entertained by RFD-TV, and reruns of The Walton's.
Back in the day when I was playing music in the nightclubs I began work with my first set at 9:30. Today that's my bedtime!

Back in our youth, when my wife and I first married, she couldn't keep her hands off me. Well that hasn't changed, but instead of amorous caresses her hands are applying Ben Gay or Aspercreme to my back!

Here's a sure fire sign of the elderly times. Back in the day when my friend and I went out for the evening with our young wives they sat next to us. But today our wives sit in the backseat and we sit in the front. And speaking of the backseat of the car, it sure doesn't hold the same forbidden, but highly sought after destination it once did.

But I suppose the benefits of being a senior citizen are worthwhile. No I don't find pleasure in the same things I once did, and the aches and pains are ever present. But I have achieved some things that I wouldn't exchange for another run at those days of youth. I am still married to the girl I wanted to marry. She's still my best (and only) girl. I've raised three beautiful daughters, have a young son, and a grandson. I am still in the music business, full time, when most of my band buddies from the past have hung up their rock and roll shoes. And most of all, I've learned some pretty important lessons in life.

I've learned that integrity, loyalty, faithfulness, Truth, God and family are the most important things a man can have, regardless of his age. My biggest regret is that I didn't learn this at a younger age. But I suppose it is one of those senior benefits of the golden years. You gotta go through it to get it. Now I have to get online. I'm going to join one of those senior citizens organizations, like AARP, AMAC or American Seniors. If you can't beat 'em join 'em. I heard I can save a lot of money on my car insurance, and get some discount tickets to Branson, MO theaters. See you down at the bingo parlor.
