Seniors Don't Need Cash to Get Odd Jobs Done

A Helping Hand is Priceless!

LGMB

How hard is it for seniors on a limited income to get jobs done around the house, that a senior may not be physically capable of doing anymore? I say, not so hard. My husband works at a building supply store where he met a friendly elderly man looking for a strong hand to clear some land intended for a garden and here's what happened.

My husband went to help this man out, he cleared the land and helped plant a new garden. This kind elderly man was only able to give my husband $35 for helping and expressed sadness because he couldn't afford to pay more. Since, we've gotten unlimited produce! This gentleman brings us tomatoes, peppers, corn, squash, cucumbers, his wife canned some things for us too and we are so glad that he brings them.

Some months later, the same elderly man told my husband that a neighbor of his needed someone to clean up her yard. This time myself, my husband and our children went to do the clean up job. When the lady asked how much she owed us, we told her she didn't owe us anything but we heard she made a mean jam cake and we would like one the next time she baked any. Sure enough, we got a jam cake and we're on contract to get another one next year for cleaning her yard again.

We've gotten our lawn cut four times this year because I did a spring cleaning job for an elderly couple. All they wanted was for someone to give the house a good deep cleaning by moving furniture, cleaning beneath items and steam cleaning the carpet. I was really surprised that this gentleman has cut our yard for us, he says it's the least he could do and what a help it has been to us too.

The last job our family did, we cleaned out a garage for an elderly woman whose husband had recently passed. The woman gave my husband a few items from the garage and she gave me a hand-made quilt that I will forever cherish because it's the most beautiful thing. Each time I look at my quilt, I think of the time it must have taken her to make that quilt and how she must have really appreciated the job we did for her because she gave me such a personal gift.

My husband and I have made quite a few friends helping out senior citizens. Each time we've helped someone it only required a day or two of our attention and we had a good time doing the jobs. If you are a senior who needs a helping hand, ask friends or family to help you and offer to do special things for them too. The things you do for them are just as valuable to them, as the things they do for you and it truly is the thought that counts.

Wonderful article. More people should take a small amount of their time to help seniors. Involve you children too. After all, we will all be seniors soon enough! Even helping a little could mean so much in someone's life.
