Seniors Have a Lifetime of Experience

Being a Senior in This Generation is Something to Be Proud of and Not Ashamed

Sondra C
I am a Senior. I have no reason to be ashamed of or hide my age. I do not think old so I do not act old or feel old.

My back hurts at times, and my feet do not let me to walk miles without pain. This, however, does not denote age. Younger people can feel the same pain and restrictions and many do.

Age has been referred to by scholars as a State of Mind. I agree. Think old and be old is my philosophy. Age does not deter me to attempt to try anything new or keep me from learning something new everyday.

This will be my last contribution directed towards the Seniors as a Contributing Editor. This classification has been eliminated. I am sure there is a good reason for it, but I do not understand why.

It makes no difference. Seniors are an important part of this Country. They have seen more than most, have done more and learned more than the younger generation. It stands to reason since they are older than others still living.

Seniors have gone through World War I & II. They have helped to keep this Country free. They fought an enemy that attempted to change the face of this nation. Very few are left to tell the story, but we should honor those who fought irregardless.

Seniors have invented many things we have today. Their knowledge helped to give us the automobiles, electricity, street lights and television, that led up to most of the Technology we have today. Seniors have and are still changing the face of this world whether it be in medicine, computer advancements, the theater, movies, or the arts.

Seniors bore the children of this generation and those of generations past. We should honor our seniors for what they have done, and for who they are - even if their greatest deed was to bear the scientists, medical doctors, lawyers, and more of today.

I am a Senior and am proud of it. I get excited at anything new that I can learn or try. Seniors should learn by going to college or cooking school or taking art lessons so they can use their brain and not lose it.

Seniors can become teachers and teach the young patience, respect and to obey those of authority. They can show them the ways of the past when people loved each other regardless of age, when teachers were respected instead of being maimed.

Seniors have a lifetime of learning behind them so respect them and help them if they are ill instead of sending them to live in a Nursing home among strangers.

Allow them to die with dignity among loved ones, whether they are cousins, aunts or immediate family. Many seniors outlive their children.

Seniors should keep learning until they find there is nothing else to learn that interests them. They should be praised instead of being yelled at by their adult children, who might get the same treatment from their own children when they become Seniors themselves.

Keep in mind. Seniors need love as well as those who are younger. They might not dress up-to-date, they might have wrinkles on their face, they might be overweight, they might not have teeth in their mouth anymore - but they are still alive and have earned respect from all they come in contact with. Remember this the next time you see a Senior standing in a bus or train. Stand up and offer them the seat. They are a part of history as it is today.

Many seniors who are lacking family face the holidays alone. They are lonely, have no one to reach out to so remember that seniors are a part of the history of this world. Ask a senior neighbor to join you for Christmas dinner with your family
members.
