Seniors, Look Younger and Feel Younger -- Get Water Exercise

Janice Meyer
Exercising in water is much easier than exercising out of water. This is why it is recommended for seniors. It is easier because the water helps one to move, walk, jog and perform other exercises that are more strenuous out of the water. The water helps you to do kick-ups, as it holds your leg up where you want it. Water helps provide buoyancy.

Everyone should have a thorough physical examination by their doctor before beginning an exercise program to make sure they are fit enough for the stress and strain. This is especially true for seniors.

Exercise is the key to healthy aging. Water exercise makes it all much easier for seniors. In addition to the usual benefits of exercise, aquatic exercises give you the added benefit of reducing the risk of joint and muscle injury. When exercises are performed in the water, your body is supported with less stress on your muscles and joints.
There are a few pieces of equipment that can be used to help one exercise in the water. One of these is:

Aquajogger Classic Women's Water Exercise Fitness Package. This water fitness aquajogger package for women, especially seniors, will help you lose weight, improve cardio function, increase upper and lower body strength and improve joint range of motion.

Below is what the package includes:
Classic Buoyancy belt -
DeltaBells - one pair of water dumbbells for resistance exercises and upper body
Aquarunners RX - One pair of foot cuffs for leg resistance
Water Workout Guide - A series of exercises that will show you how to benefit from all the parts of this package
23 minute "Getting Started" DVD

The buoyancy belt will keep you on a straight path. You can run , jog, or do stair-steps in place in the water. The water gives resistance as you exercise, but you get a better workout. The water dumbbells will help you with upper body resistance exercises. One pair of ankle or foot cuffs for leg resistance, where you can walk or jog slowly with resistance. The water workout guide will help you through a group of exercises and will show you how to benefit from all the elements of this package. Don't forget the 23-minute "Getting Started" DVD.

The aquajogger classic water exercise buoyancy belt is a wonderful piece of equipment. For seniors, especially if they cannot swim or perhaps swim just a little, the buoyancy belt will keep them as safe as can be. They will be able to exercise as long as they wish. However, seniors should not get overly tired when exercising

AquaCell Ankle Resistance Water Cuffs are custom molded from superior spongex aquacell foam. These products have no glue lines, rough edges or seams. State-of-the-art manufacturing produces clean, attractive, finished products every time. If you prefer simply walking, that can be a great beneficial move to lose weight, as you will feel quite a resistance with the water cuffs, which will help you reach your goals.

If you are not a swimmer, you should stay in the shallower area of a pool, where you can stand upwright with the water reaching a little above your waist. Even if you are wearing your aquabelt and water cuffs, do not go into the deep areas of a pool.

Another point I want to mention for seniors is, do not get into extremely cold water to exercise. I learned this the hard way. I was attending water exercise at a school pool, where the water was shocking cold. Then one day, my legs looked almost all black. I visited my doctor, and he told me I should not be getting into cold water. That was possibly due to my arthritis.

With all of these helpful devices for water exercise, seniors should feel safe and confident to join an exercise group or club. Seniors are the individuals who gain the most benefits from this type of exercise. You can find many of these devices for water exercise at: http://www.neffitco.com/aquatic.html.

I'm not a senior yet, but I can see how this would be beneficial for me. I have neck and back problems and feel like I'm 80 at times. Thanks!

I used to love to swim when I was a young woman. I wish I had my own pool now, these sound like great ideas.
