Don't Get Caught Up in Marketing Fads

Chris Miller
SEO is crucial for any on-line business, and there is no shortage of gimmicks and marketing fads out there claiming to instantly place your site at the top of search engines. It is important to remember, that no one can guarantee you a high ranking for any site or keyword, so steer clear of any miracle marketing ploys that promise page one listings overnight. Some of these techniques may actually work, but only for so long.

False Hope

Search engines spend a lot of time and money tweaking their algorithms to deliver relevant up to date content to their users. Occasionally, someone figures out a way to "trick the system" and move their site up to the top quickly, but the fact is - it's just a trick, and the rewards will not last forever. There was a time when getting good listings was as simple as exchanging links with other webmasters, but the search engines caught on and changed their system, and these links are heavily devalued now. At one point, the link wheel appeared and quickly blasted many sites to the top... but in time the search engines caught on, and their rankings all dropped. Meanwhile, others spent their time creating content and building value for their users, and their sites continued to rise up the rankings, where they will remain.

Backlink Building Tricks

Search engines view each link to your website as a "vote" in its favor, so the more links you have, the better your website will rank in the SERP's (search engine results pages). Over the years, internet marketers have developed many ways to build backlinks on your own, through blog commenting, forum profiles, social bookmarking and more, but will the value of these links last? Remember, the search engines only value backlinks since they are a vote from another webmaster. If you are building the links yourself, it really isn't a "vote" for your site, and the search engines are catching on. They are aware of these techniques, and it's only a matter of time before they devalue these links as well. Instead of trying to build backlinks, build a high quality website with good unique content, and people will link to you naturally. These are the greatest links with the highest value, and will not be devalued by search engines.

Slow And Steady Wins The Race

If you are at all serious about being successful with your website, take your time and do things right. Practice good on-site SEO, build unique, quality content for your readers and your site will rank well in time, and will continue to rank well.
