SEO Tips You Can Apply to Your Website

The main objective of search engine optimization SEO is to drive traffic to your site. It can be your own website, your blog, Squidoo lens or whatever you want people to see that will generate some kind of revenue in the form of sales, affiliate marketing or paid advertisement. The idea here is to make sure that your sites are optimized so that search engine bots can pick them up and list them in the top search engines. The big players are Google, Yahoo and MSN, but the biggest of the three is Google, so make sure you do everything possible to optimize your page for Google algorithms.

Google and the other search engines use algorithms that go through the web and end up showing relevant websites related to the keywords you use in your search. The algorithms used but the search engines to come up with their listings are unknown to most of us except for some employees at these companies, but some people has discovered some of the most important factors that determine the rank of a website in their listings.

In SEO one of the most important things you can do in your website is to optimize the title tag. Simple changes in this important element can increase or decrease your listings dramatically so you must use your main keyword in this space. The title tag is not visible b you or your visitors unless they see your HTML code, but search engine spiders use it to determine what your website is about. Once you have chosen the correct keywords for your title tag, you must use these keywords in your headings, subheadings and also in your text to increase its effectiveness.

Another factor to consider is your headings, especially your H1 headings because they have a lot of weight in the text within it. One thing to avoid is to use the exact same text in your title tag and H1 headings. The text you use in the title tag can be a little more extensive since it shows your content to bots and not humans, but if you use the same words in your H1 headings, then it might turn out bad. In h1 headings use only the main title with your main keyword; a short sentence. You can add then more information in h1 headlines or text.

The use you give to your keywords is also crucial. You should have your main keywords repeated throughout your website in an estimated 3% - 5% density. Too much will make the search engine spiders suspicious and too few won't carry the importance you want to give them. This is a basic approach only; there are entire books dedicated to this subject but the density is something you need to keep in mind.
