Separating Mathematical Opinion from Biblical Truth

Mathew Mount
The Bible is without error when examined in its own context under the direction of the Holy Ghost and with its own methods of examination employed. Utilizing any other methods of examination other than what the scripture promotes, could in fact result in the discovery of error because the examination methods themselves are the product of falsehood and sometimes the utter abomination of man. 1 Kings 7:23 for example describes a circular object that has a diameter of 10 and a Circumference of 30, but the problem is that grade school mathematics of today teaches that a object with a diameter of 10 has a circumference of approximately 31.41592653589793. If in this example, grade school children had never been exposed to complicated formulas that teach how to calculate circumference from diameter, then they would not have any reason to suppose that 1 Kings 7:23 was wrong about its measurements unless they had learned such formulas on their own.

The Christian should realize that Jesus rising from the dead is a biblical fact, but the equation 1 + 1 = 2 is simply just a opinion held by many people without any real basis in fact. Such is true because one drop of water could be added to another drop of water to equal one drop of water total (this is 1 + 1 = 1). The truth is that 1 + 1 could equal anything real or imaginary in any quantity because the system of mathematics known of as arithmetic is something just completely invented to explain the world as a product of someone's thinking and imagination, but Jesus Christ is not just real but instead he is the maker and sustaining factor of reality (he is the bases for all reality). Overall, what is generally understood is that all of mathematics is a study of language, and differing mathematical languages are designed to describe or communicate differing real or imagined occurrences in such a way that they can be reasoned through quantitatively (Jesus as Word of God is far beyond this type of language).

Just like mathematics all natural language that people speak has the same quality of being a created thing that someone made as well as being the product of someone's opinion. When people use symbols or sounds to represent ideas, things, feeling, and such, the system that organizes meaning to those sounds and symbols is called a natural language such as English, German, French, and such. The fact that different systems exist for representing symbols and sounds means that people have differing opinions regarding how to use symbols and sounds to communicate with one another. Overall, people generally are willing to put these opinions aside to communicate with one another in some cases, and thus a German man can talk with a French man by learning the system of sounds that represent ideas and such that the French generally use.

The scripture is perhaps composed of several layers of systems of language, systems of thought, and even traditions in morality and such. All of these things should be consistent within the context of their surroundings in scripture. The task however of those that really care to know God is to learn and relate to God beyond the surface of Biblical language, systems of thought, morality, tradition, and such.

Knowing distinctly the personalities, emotions, and reasoning of God, would provide clear explanation for understanding the purpose of all creation and the purpose of God's message. Only if a person could understand fully the purpose of a message could they understand exactly what is being said and how it is being said. In the case of the Bible, this takes divine revelation without substitution, and without ever receiving this revelation a person is hopelessly condemned to hell for all eternity.

Without the revelation of the gospel, a person is condemned to not understand the message of the gospel even if they believe that they understand it. Without the revelation of God the Trinity, a person does not know God even if they claim to have known him. Without the revelation of the Word of God, no one could ever understand it even if they claim to be experts over it. Overall, the revelation of the scripture as having no errors is a gift given from God, and this conclusion cannot ever be arrived at any other way but to receive it from God (after all - all good things come from God).

Lots of uses could be employed of the scripture. It could be burned in a fireplace to keep warm, it could be used as a door stop, it could be memorized in all of its words, it could be obeyed mindlessly like a robot, it could be refuted by an atheist, and it could even be accepted fully by an unbeliever that remains an unbeliever (no one really knows how many times Satan himself has read the scripture and committed it to memory - it has not saved him yet). In all of these cases a person may believe that they believe the scripture to be without error even in the example of an atheist. Some rare people for example recognize the truth of Christianity and the possibility of a error free Bible without the ability to have trust in God, and as a result would remain atheist by making God into a concept of context (sort of like a imaginary figure that everyone agrees upon). The point is that believing the Truth likely has little or nothing to do with the mode that we choose to use to interact with the scripture, but believing the truth in clarity may have very much to do with the mode that we choose to use to interact with the scripture. Believing the scripture to have errors or not could in fact be vary similar, and in this regard a person does not believe the scripture to be without error based upon details given but instead based upon the gift of revelation concerning this matter.
