Sept. 17: Psycho Donuts opens second location in downtown San Jose

I have tasted kooky, and it was sweet.

Dubbed Berry Kooky, the vegan cake donut topped with strawberry icing and Oreo cookie crumbles is one of the many donuts found at Psycho Donuts in Campbell, Calif. Each donut is decorated in a stylish and crazy manner is also named to fit a crazy theme. My favorite is the Michael Jackson, which is a dark chocolate donut dusted white with powdered sugar. Even the King of Pop could crack a smile. Themed like a mental hospital that has occasionally toned down due to protests from mental health advocates claiming the donut shop portrays negative stereotypes of people with mental illnesses, the clerks dress as doctors or nurses while a padded cell is a central point of the shop. All in all this is not your typical donut shop.

But for those downtown San Jose residents who do not feel like commuting to Campbell for some sweetly fried doughy goodness, you will be pleased to learn that Psycho Donuts is opening a second location at the lobby of the Camera 3 Theaters and ComedySportz. It is conveniently near the San Jose Convention Center, the SOFA district and San Jose State University, so a steady stream of customers is almost definite.

It does make for a conveniently nice and unique night out. Whether taking a break during a convention or from studies, a simple walk to the corner of Second and San Carlos would land you smack dab at the Camera 3 Theaters. After watching a film, watching some live improv comedy, or taking classes in said improv comedy, what better way is there to cap off the night than a donut that simply stands in a different box among its brethren? You will simply never see another donut like the ones of Psycho Donuts.

While the official opening of Psycho Donuts in the San Jose location is on September 17th, the official San Jose launch will take place at Camera 3 the night before between 6PM-9PM.Dubbed Donut Stop Laughing, the launch event will allow visitors to stop to see the shop inside the theater lobby, partake in a sample donut, watch a few comedy sketches from ComedySportz, and more. Other events in conjunction with Camera 3 Theaters are in the works as well.

Hopefully the similar crazy theme will be the same in San Jose so that the downtown will have a does of some well-deserved crazy.
