I always display my American flag on this day, because I swore that I would never forget what happened or the people who died that day, and I never will. I still feel the anger and I still wait for the day that Osama Bin Laden is killed. Notice I didn't say "for justice to be served" or "for Osama to be brought to trial", I said I want him to die. I have never felt so strongly about wanting another human being to be gone from this planet, but for him, I would dance on his grave.
September 11, 2001 is a day in the United States of America where everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when the Twin Towers were hit. We remember watching part of the Pentagon burning and hearing about the plane that went down in a Pennsylvania field. An acquaintance of mine lost her husband when the Pentagon was hit. She lost her husband and her kids lost their father that day.
I was asleep when the first plane hit New York City. I was a police officer at the time. My mom called me and woke me up with these words, "Sherri, are you watching the TV?" Uh, no mom, I'm sleeping, I work swing shifts remember? "You need to get up right now and turn the TV on, something is happening, something bad I think." I asked her what channel and she said all the channels were showing a plane hitting the World Trade Center in NY. I jumped up, turned the TV on and watched this country's nightmare unfold in front of my eyes.
By the time the second plane hit the other tower; I knew for certain my country was under attack. I thought about my visit to NYC in 1998, and visiting the Twin Towers. I wondered how many people I had seen then, were dead now. I remember saying, "Oh my God", over and over and I remember a lot of tears and immediately wanting to enact retribution on those who attacked us. 8 years later, thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes and the need to see those who committed the atrocity, to be punished to the extreme. I have a lot of room for forgiveness in my heart, but not in this case, not this time.
We have been very lucky that another attack has not occurred since that day, though there have been many plots to do us more harm. The only good thing that came out of September 11, 2001 was that for awhile, this country was not Republican and Democrat, we were not black and white, gay and straight, we were Americans who were united in our anger and grief. We flew our flags proudly and we defied those who would do us harm and seek to intimidate us. I hope that 8 years later, I will still see those flags flying, pride in our country and for even 1 day, a united stance in the United States.

I wanted to come back and read this again. So great, Sherri.

Along the lines of John Myer's comment, my best friend Eric had joined the army reserves, and he VOLUNTEERED to go full time active duty when this happened, as did many a patriotic young American. That is why it saddens me even more that they were misused, thinking they would go after Bin Laden, but insteads, Eric did htree tours in Iraq to get the hand-picked dictator that double-crossed Bush. NEVER FORGET (Jon Grabowski, my cousin, (1969-2001) 9/11 WTC)
Just excellent, as always...:)
Great piece Sherri! You know, in the days and weeks following that day, I seriously considered joining the army. I was so angry at these people I would have done anything to get em.
Thank you for this beautifully written article. It's important to always remember.
Sherri, your writings manage to bring to remembrance...inspire thought...and call to action. I really like that! And while I liked seeing the unity in our country after 9/11, it was our Congress' verbal acknowledgment that God would see us through that touched me, personally, the most. It's true what they say: there are no athesists in fox holes are on dying beds. And when national tragedy of this magnitude struck...that's when His name was uttered all over our land. I noticed you said you kept saying, "Oh, my God" too. But forget "religion"; I'm not "religious." It's all about God; not man made institutions and buildings. The Church is made up of people. People like you and me who care about others.
This is a very well done article. Unfortunately when you reference the country being united for a little while, it seems that in fact it was just for a little while. It seems like the country has been deeply divided for quite some time now. Thank you for taking time to write about this important day in our nation's history.
Hi Sherri, our American flag is flown all the time. The events of 9/11 still impact me. I will never get over the image of people in business clothes jumping out of windows. I hope I never have to see that again. A friend of mine was scheduled to have a meeting in the Twin Towers on 9/11. She called in to cancel, so she didn't go in for the meeting. The person that she talked to on the phone and everyone else who she was to meet with are now dead. Will we ever find Osama Bin Laden? I don't know. After watching Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," I have lots of questions about that.
