September 11 is A Day for Remembering and Tribute

Billie Presby
On Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 the lives of millions of Americans changed. There was a terrorist attack on American soil. Almost 3000 people lost their lives due to the attacks on 9/11. But the rest of us will be haunted forever by the events of that day.

Ask anyone where they were or what they were doing on 9/11 and they can probably answer in detail just what that was. I remember being a work and getting a call about the plane crashes from a friend. I didn't believe it at first, and all we had was a radio. There were so many mixed messages of what actually happened, we had no idea what was going on. When I got home later I saw on TV the images of smoke, people jumping out of windows and the ultimate terror going on throughout the country. The images on TV still disturb me to this day. If they didn't, I wouldn't know what to think of myself.

I also remember how after the attacks, Americans bonded together. People were polite to each other. Opening doors, letting people have their parking spots, letting them out in traffic. Cars decorated American flags and stickers. People proudly wore red white and blue shirts. We cried to Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA, as it was played on almost every radio station. We talked to family more often. We showed our respects to our countries sacrifice.

But then the joining together slowing faded away. People went back to how they used to be. Then came the war talks. People were angry that we allowed such an attack and cried for war! Make them pay for what they did! But when something did happen, people resented it. Maybe that isn't what they wanted, but it was inevitable to happen. As a group, you will never be able to make everyone happy. I knew the party was over, so to speak, when a police officer told me to take down a sign in the back of my car that said "GOD BLESS THE USA!"

Now the anniversary of a tragedy looms closer. People may fall into that euphoria that effected us all after 9/11, but it wont last. I ask this, why do we only feel we need to pay tribute or come together as Americans on this day? Why not every other day of the year? That is what America needs. Us to stand together on April 11th, June 18th, October 25th, any day! Yes, we will mourn those lost on this day most of all, but their families mourned before this day and will continue to after the day is over.

For the sake of our country that unfortunately will always have the threat of terrorism at some point, we need to be together through everything that is thrown our way. To support our troops that are defending your right to protest them with their lives, to support our country by flying a flag in your yard. Support your neighbors, support our troops and support our country. Together we are undefeatable.
