September Holidays You Probably Aren't Aware Of

There Are Many Odd Celebrations for the Month of September

While browsing an online ecard site, searching for just the right card to send to my daughter for her birthday on September 2nd, I noticed a section set aside for cards celebrating daily holidays. Curious, I checked it out, and had a good chuckle at some of the occasions listed. I will discuss the most interesting ones in this article.

September 5th of each year is also known as "Be Late" Day, according to American Greetings. Try being late on this day and sending your boss an ecard telling him why it's the thing to do. I'm sure he'll be impressed.

Ever hear of Back Hair Appreciation Day? Yes, back hair. This "holiday" falls on September 6th, and I presume you are to seek out an acquaintance with masses of back hair, and spend some time appreciating it. No thanks... I'll pass on that one.

Now, I like this one. September 10th is "Swap Ideas Day". The idea behind this is to celebrate brainstorming with friends and coming up with ideas to better the world around you. What a great thought! I'll be sending this one out come the 10th of September each year.

"Clean Out Your Junk Drawer Day" is celebrated on September 13th. Everyone has a junk drawer... or two. I guess you are supposed to set aside this day once a year to clean and tidy these catch-all spots in our homes. Sound advice! This one should become more well known in our American culture.

September 14th's holiday really makes me laugh. Designated as "Hug a Crabby Stranger Day", this one has possibilities both good and bad. The good thing about celebrating an ordinary day by going up to a total stranger and giving them a hug is that you just might make someone's day, and also find yourself with a new friend. On the other hand, this holiday does have its ominous undertones. In today's world, going up to a stranger and throwing your arms around them might just be grounds for a lawsuit! Better think this one through first.

"Talk Like A Pirate Day" on September 19th is a little confusing. How does one talk like a pirate? There are only so many times you can get away with saying "Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum" and get away with it! If you want to celebrate this holiday, a little research will be in order.

September 20th's "Board Game Appreciation Day" could be a lot of fun if you already have a good supply of board games at home. Otherwise, it could run into some expense, as most good board games are not cheap. If you're on a budget, I suggest going to a well stocked toy store and appreciating the board games on the shelves to save a few bucks.

"World Gratitude Day" is celebrated on September 21st. This is a day when people worldwide should get together and be grateful for whatever they have, for however minimal their possessions may seem to them, someone somewhere is always worse off. If more people would realize this and celebrate this day, the world would be a better place.

No one should ever need an excuse for enjoying an ice cream cone, but just in case you do, September 22nd's "Ice Cream Cone Day" is the best excuse for indulging anyone could come up with. The invention of the ice cream cone was patented on this date in 1903, which makes it a perfect time to celebrate the joy of cones in all their glory. Waffle for me, please.

September 23rd is "Neptune Day", commemorating the day back in 1846 that the planet was discovered. Kids should enjoy celebrating this one, as most are fascinated by astronomy and the planets. An entire space themed party could be planned for this day, with the great planet Neptune featured.

"Family Health and Fitness Day" on September 27th is a great day to celebrate exercising together as a family. Swim, ride bikes, even take a walk! It's all good exercise, and that's what this day is all about.

Last, but not least, how about September 30th's "Ask A Stupid Question Day"? If there's a question you always wanted to ask someone, but felt it was just too stupid, now's your chance to embrace this day and ask away! There are no guarantees of an answer, but it's well worth a try!

These September holidays are fun and entertaining as well. Enjoy this September by adding something different to your day in the form of a little-known holiday celebration!
