September is National Biscuit Month

Lori Piper
September is National Biscuit Month. Yes, it is!! Do you enjoy biscuits? I know I do. But does this mean with biscuits having their own celebration month that one must only eat biscuits during the month of September? Of course not. Especially since biscuits are a staple in our home.

What are some ways to celebrate this month then? Make biscuits more often for one thing! What are some others?

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #1

Biscuits and gravy anyone? Now that is a breakfast fit for, well, not only champions (not Wheaties!) but everyone. Biscuits with eggs and gravy will jump start a child's school day and keep him or her better focused in the classroom until lunchtime.

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #2

There is a Minor League baseball team- the Montgomery Biscuits. Keep up with them this month and cheer them on.

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #3

Treat your canine family member extra special this month. Give him or her one biscuit a day. Try something new. Be daring, be adventurous. After all, you are celebrating. Let your dog celebrate, too. Another wonderful way would be to donate a box or bag of dog biscuits to your local animal shelter or area rescue. Is your canine a cocker spaniel? Look up cocker spaniel rescues located in your area (www.petfinder.org can be a useful tool in this endeavor.)

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #4

Listen to the Gorilla Biscuits. They may not be everyone's cup of tea, as they are a hardcore punk group. But what the heck, during this month I will give them a listen. Cannot find yourself able to listen? Try the Disco Biscuits. (I am not making these names up!) They are what are known as a trance fusion jam band out of Philadelphia. What that means exactly, I am not sure, so take a listen and let me know.

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #5

Create your own. Add some chocolate chips. Brush with garlic (but, please, not on the same batch.) Call a family member you recollect fondly and discuss biscuit recipes. I know invention is a sign of personal genius, but tried and true recipes have their perks also!! Not only will you gain a tried and true recipe, but will enjoy a memorable conversation. For both parties!

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #6

Cuddle with your cat. Ever heard the term "making biscuits" in regards to a cat? That means the cat is pawing on you over and over again. The cat will be happy, as will you. Making biscuits is typically coupled with purring and the sound of a cat purr can lower blood pressure. Not only will you be celebrating, but you will be receiving a positive health benefit!

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #7

Research the meaning of the word biscuit. Where does it come from? From the French meaning "twice baked".

Ways to observe National Biscuit Month #8

The way I am going to celebrate most? Making biscuits in a jar and handing out to friends and family. Why wait for the holidays to give presents? Biscuits in a jar can be a wonderful "just because" gift. Enjoy helping others to celebrate this month.

Enjoy this month. I know I will.
