September is National Library Card Sign Up Month

Lori Piper
What do football and books have in common this month? The American Library Association has named the 2006 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Ben Roathlisberger as spokesperson for National Library Card Sign Up Month.

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month. Have you signed up yet? Does everyone in your family have a their own card?

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Knowledge

Knowledge is power. With a library card, entire repositories full of books, periodicals, newspapers, people, and information are at your fingertips. The library can be considered our world's most powerful search engine! Your librarian(s) can be your tech support and guides.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Politics

Did you know that you can obtain a voter registration card for your local library? Local politicians can be found at your local libraries promoting their issues.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Computer access

Several libraries are wireless now. Have a laptop and a two-hour break between classes? Go to the library and complete your work. Libraries are efficient at promoting time management for the very busy. Want to update your My Space page? You can at the library. Keep in touch with friends and family that way.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Tutorials

Libraries offer countless classes on computers. Whether you are a novice (yes, there are still some computer novices out there...) or a professional needing a quick reorientation lesson because of a job promotion; your local library can assist you.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Book discussion groups

Love books and want to share your thoughts? Join a reading group. Libraries offer a variety of book clubs; fiction, non-fiction, mysteries, young adult and even science fiction.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Childhood development

Libraries offer pre school story time. Bring your child and encouragement involvement with other children as well as introducing him or her to the wonderful world of reading and imagination. Friends with other parents and children can make and craft time is also offered.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Local Community News

Libraries offer a vast array of special events sponsored by local establishments and people. You can learn about animal care, personal health management and even attend income tax seminars.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Movies

Check movies. I have checked out movies I grew up with and shared them with my children as well as some of the latest releases of movies that we can watch as a family.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Music

Rather than spend twenty dollars only to learn you liked just the one song on that new CD, check it out from the library and have a free listen first.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Art

Local libraries display art by local artists. Broaden your cultural horizons. Once you view an art piece you enjoy, research to discover more about that type of art.

Ways a library card can be of assistance- Quiet time

Have an hour or an afternoon to spare? Go to the library, check out a book, and curl up on any of the comfortable chairs offered and read.

Libraries are a wonderful and necessary part of our culture. Become an active part. Sign up for a library card this month! Remember in order to maintain as well as make improvements your local library depends on your patronage.

I haven't used my library card for years and I love the library too. Thank you for the reminder. I will have to see if mine is still valid. Libraries are wonderful inventions and in my price range too, lol.

When I was teaching preschool I visited the library every week to check out books on the topic for the upcoming week. I was kind of surprised that none of my three and four year olds knew what a library was!

That's one disadvantage to all the technology today:(
This is a great article. I love how you tied football to reading!

I do have a library card and I visit my local library often. Local libraries have different programs and features that are free of charge or inexpensive, specially for kids. Great article!
