September is Self Awareness Month

Lori Piper
Another national observance this month is Self Awareness. International Self Awareness Month. This one can be a toughie for some, just another day for others. Are you aware? Truly aware of whom you are? What does it mean to- to quote Socrates- "know thyself"? One means is to identify, emphasize, as well as explore the tools people have for this concept. Are you up to date on your lingo of self awareness? Are you up to date on the tools used to guide one on a journey of becoming self aware?

It can be quite confusing but it is a task worth taking. If for no other reason than to say you took part of this national month long observance. I wonder why it is only warranted a month long observance, since really, self awareness is an ever evolving part of each us.

Ways I am aware of myself

I am me. Why should I describe myself to you? What is wrong with you describing yourself to me?
(I can be a bit standoffish.)
I am me. I am human.
(I can be a bit of a generalist.)
I am me. I am female.
(I can be a bit emotional.)
I am me. I am a daughter and a mom.
(I have become like my own mother.)
I am me. I am a fighter for animal rights.
(I am a true believer in underdogs.)
I am me. I am a student.
(I love being a seeker of knowledge.)
I am me. I am employed.
(I am underpaid and under appreciated.)
I am me. I am cost efficient.
(I love being thrifty and shopping for bargains.)
I am me. I am generous and kind.
(I am one from who advantages are often taken.)
I am me. I am a Christian.
(I am saved. I live my life for Him. )
I am funny.
(I find humor everywhere.)
I am an avid reader.
(I have an insatiable imagination.)
I enjoy how words all come from the same 26 letters.
(I love to write.)
I am loyal.
(I have some very dear friends.)
I love to go to the batting cages.
(I express my anger constructively.)
I have curly hair.
(I have many bad hair days.)
I am often times too serious
(I am overly sensitive.)
I dislike being late for any function.
(I am a people pleaser.)
I enjoy the art of doing nothing at times.
(I know how to relax.)
My idea of doing nothing is still completing a little something.
(I have some control issues.)
I am alive.
(I LOVE LIFE!)

Being aware of self can assist us in several ways:

We can halt self-destructive behaviors, self-defeating patterns, self-attacking, and self-abusive thoughts and feelings. Those behaviors are hurting us most of all.

We can eliminate stressors created from a perpetual state of high anxiety. Learning to let go is an important lesson.

We can help others whom are hurting. The more self aware we are, the better able we are to know the signs of others whom are hurting.

We can feel free to express ourselves appropriately as well as learn to communicate in a healthy manner.

Express yourself this month!! Be self aware!!
