Serena Williams Goes Nuclear, Loses in US Open Semis

J. R. Steele
While watching SportsCenter on ESPN, I see that Serena Williams was ousted from the US Open in the blink of an eye in Saturday night's tennis match-up. The defending US Open champion lost in the semi finals to Kim Clijsters in two sets after a bizarre chain of events. Already down a set and serving to stay alive (5-6, 15-30) in the second set, Ms. Williams faulted on her first serve. On the second serve, she was called for a foot fault by a line judge. Double fault... Uh Oh! Match point... advantage Ms. Clijsters. Foot faults are rarely called at such critical stages of any match, let alone the semis of the US Open. Ms. Williams couldn't believe it herself. Unable to put it out of her mind, she lashed out at the line judge with a verbal assault: "If I could, I would take this #%#^@ ball and shove it down your #%#^@ throat!" she screamed.

In an even more unusual move, the line judge rushed over to the umpire's chair to report the incident. Obviously the chair umpire had heard the outburst and felt as though it was a momentary expression of frustration. But, the tournament referee Brian Earley decided to join in the conversation too. Soon after Ms. Williams joined the discussion. In that instant, Ms. Williams exclaims in shock and awe: "I didn't say I would kill you. Are you serious? Are you serious? I didn't say that."

As these events transpired, the SportsCenter camera footage showed that Ms. Clijsters remained at the baseline waiting to continue the match. An accomplished tennis professional, Ms. Clijsters is currently unranked and was playing in just her 3rd tournament since returning to the USTA Women's Pro circuit after 2½ years in retirement. She probably wasn't expecting what happened next.

Game, Set, Match!

That's right. The chair umpire ruled that Serena Williams' actions were unsportsmanlike. Because Ms. Williams had previously been given a warning for breaking her racket at the end of the first set, she was assessed a penalty point; Match point. After the ruling, Ms. Williams congratulated her opponent and exited the court in frustration with no further incident.

The unseeded Kim Clijsters advanced to the finals of the 2009 US Open.

We all lose it from time to time (even me), but unfortunately, if you're famous the whole world is privy to it. It must be hard to be famous; I think I'll pass on that "blessing."

I know this is about tennis but you know who impresses me in terms of discipline and self-control? Tiger Woods... That's one dude who can deal with pressure. He's had a few tiffs too but usually it's for good reason. Popping flashes when you need to concentrate on a shot, that's ignorant.

Well just shows you how much pressure these sportspeople are under...just shows they are very much human amd sometimes their guard does come down

Very unfortunate. I can understand how someone who is putting their absolute all into a match could have a flash of temper, and it really shouldn't have gone any farther than that. Very good article, presented with the facts and none of the overblown sensationalism the news media has been pumping into it!

Oh well. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Serena should have been penalized for smashing her racket. She was losing badly and was about to lose and simply, could not handle it so acted like a total pig, cursing and physically intimidating a line judge. I am so happy she lost badly and hoepfully, might think of getting herslef some lessons in proper decorum. Tennis is tennis. Serena's temper and dispicable conduct proves she is better suited to wrestle or play hockey.

The line judge did not rush over to 'tattle' on Serena...she was called over by the umpire...if you watched, the line judge then returned to her chair and it seemed that they were going to let play continue, but Serena couldn't let it go and gave her some more flack. It was after the second time, that it became the bigger deal and cost Serena the match.
