Serenity with Anticipation: A Child Fishing

Calm Until it Isn't Any More

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

A whisperingly warm
Summer day
By an inland shore
She does as she
Has been taught.
Be calm,
Stand still,
Don't make any
Loud noises
And relax.
Someone told her
That a fish
Would come.
She believes
And holds her
Hopes and
Anticipatory excitement
In check.

In truth,
She may be less calm
Than the vision
The adult behind her
Enjoys.
The serenity enjoyed
By both children
And adults
Is always,
In part,
Anticipatory.

A nibble?
A bite?
A tug on the line?
The serenity
Morphs into
Excitement
At last.

This makes me remember when my daddy taught me how to go fishing when I was a little girl. He showed me how to put a worm on the hook (eww, gross!) and then to hold the fishing pole just like that - I caught a small flounder, we took it home and after we cleaned it my mommy cooked it and I had it for supper.
