Sermon Notes for Matthew 1:2-16

T. Schnieders
These are my notes and scripture references that I used in a recent sermon, the point of this message was to show that God uses everyone in his master plan, from believers to sinners, gentile, heathens, and more. Everyone has a value to God and this sermon shows the outline of how God used over 42 generations of people and placed them each in the perfect place and situation to help prepare future generations for the birth of Christ Jesus.

I wanted to use the genealogy of Christ because this is often one of the most overlooked chapters in the Bible. Often when I speak with both believers and non-believers they state that when the read the Bible they get bored with and I quote " so and so begot so and so, this guy begot this guy. I don't understand it and I got bored and closed my Bible or skipped over it to the next chapter".

So I wanted to break it down and help give others who encounter similar statements a better tool to explain why "so and so begot so and so, this guy begot this guy".

Thus hopefully helping ease communication and confusion most readers of the bible may have.

These are just notes that I used for roughly a 30-45 minute sermon, feel free to use them and even expand on them with your own research. Enjoy and God Bless.

The genealogy of Christ in the book of Mathew shows us the Christ is the rightful successor of the throne of David as according to Jewish law.

Matthew 1:2-16

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, out of 8 sons Isaac was a gift to Abraham from God, a promised seed. Abraham obeyed God for this gift; Isaac obeyed his father and was offered as a sacrifice to God. Gen.22

Isaac the father of Jacob, out of two sons Esau & Jacob only Jacob was chosen by God. Gen.25

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,

Gen. 38 Tamar was Judah's Daughter in law by his first son. God deemed his first 2 sons wicked and struck them down. Tamar deceived Judah by dressing as a harlot and seducing him after his wife died. Since she was still technically the wife of Judah's 1st son her children would inherit his birthright.

Perez the father of Hezron,

Hezron the father of Ram,

4 Ram the father of Amminadab,

Amminadab the father of Nahshon,

Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Rahab was a prostitute from Jericho a land that God had cursed. She repented and turned to God and married Boaz. Josh.6

Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Ruth was born of incest from Lot and his daughter descendents. Gen.19:30 these descendants (Moabites or tribe of Moab) where banned in Deuteronomy 23:3 from ever entering the Assembly of Jehovah. Ruth sought after God and his people and God accepted her.

Both Rahab and Ruth where gentiles of low class proving Christ is related to both Jew and Gentile Both from sinful backgrounds but it shows that if you seek God and his people you can be accepted to the birthright of Christ.

Obed the father of Jesse, Isaiah 11:1-10 Prophesying Christ would sprout from Jesse

6 and Jesse the father of King David, 1 Sam.16:10-13 David was Chosen and anointed by God to be a great king of a new generation of Kings for a new Kingdom of God.

David was a man after the heart of God. (1 Sam 13:14)

David committed Murder and Adultery and God sent the prophet Nathan to rebuke him. 2 Sam 12:1-12 David repented (Psalm 51) and God Forgave him (2 Sam 12:13)

David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,

Solomon's mother was Bathsheba; David murdered Uriah and took Bathsheba as his wife. Bathsheba was a Hittite which was a tribe of Heathens.

David has 2 sons related to the coming of Christ, Solomon is blood relation to Joseph, But David's Son Nathan is direct blood relation to Mary.

7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, After his birth the Kingdom of David was divided into 12 tribes(1 Kings 11:9-12, 12:1-17) 10 tribes of Israel to the north, and the tribes of Judah and Benjamin to the south.

Rehoboam the father of Abijah,

Abijah the father of Asa,

8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,

Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,

Jehoram the father of Uzziah,

9 Uzziah the father of Jotham,

Jotham the father of Ahaz,

Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,

Manasseh the father of Amon,

Amon the father of Josiah,

11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

Kings24:15

12 After the exile to Babylon:

Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel

Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, (Ezra 5:1-2) Zerubbabel returned to Jerusalem thus putting into place that his later descendents would be near Bethlehem setting up Gods Plan for Christ to be born there. As Prophesized in Micah 5:2

13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,

Abiud the father of Eliakim,

Eliakim the father of Azor,

14 Azor the father of Zadok,

Zadok the father of Akim,

Akim the father of Eliud,

15 Eliud the father of Eleazar,

Eleazar the father of Matthan,

Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Jacob is Joseph's father but in Luke 3:23 they list Joseph as the son of Heli which according to Jewish custom since Mary is Heli's daughter Joseph takes her inheritance and becomes Heli's "Son" or in today's standards "Son in Law"

The Genealogy listed in Luke traces Christ's ancestors on Mary's side of the family.

Where Mathews Genealogy shows Joseph's side since under Jewish law for the time Jesus would be heir to Joseph since he was what man would consider his "Father"

The Genealogy listed in Luke traces back to God through Seth and Adam showing that the Birth, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus had restored man back to God.

Where in Mathews list of Generations shows Jesus is Descendent of Abraham showing he is the rightful Heir to the throne of David.
