Serve a Scrumptious Sorbet like Oprah's to Your Guests Without Breaking Your Pocketbook!

Julie Boehlke
With the recent episode of the Oprah show airing her most favorite things, I tuned in to see what she had to offer to her guests this year.

The audience was in shock when they learned that they were the recipients of all of Oprah's favorite things, and would be receiving them that very day to take home and place under their own Christmas trees.

Oprah never skimps on the finer things in life. She is classy and only has the best and most tantalizing products and services to surround herself with.

One thing that she does in style is she knows how to entertain and to make others smile through great tasting food. One of her favorite food items on the show was the Blood Orange Sorbetto. This fancy little ice cream will set your pocketbook back a cool $4.99 a pint, which is very pricey and hardly enough to go around to share.

Blood orange juice is one of the main ingredients and can usually be found at whole food stores such as Local Harvest.

Last weekend I had a cooking party at my house and this was one of the recipes I made for my crowd of about 15 guests. I tried to recreate the decadent Blood Orange Sorbetto from Oprah's show, but make it more cost friendly. They were all begging for the recipe by the time the night was over. I tried to keep the cost down as low as possible when preparing this recipe. I've come up with my own concoction that will leave your taste buds tantalized and your guests begging for seconds.

Blood Orange Sorbetto Clone Recipe

To start off you will need the following ingredients:

1/3 of a cup of granulated sugar

2 cups of strained blood orange juice (Note: This can be pricey at $12.00 for 4lbs, but you can substitute with half parts of Florida Orange Juice to half parts of all natural grapefruit juice and a dash of red food coloring, Making this adjustment will aid in keeping costs down)

1 cup of water

2 teaspoons of very finely grated blood orange zest

2 tablespoons of orange flavored liqueur or vodka

2 teaspoons of lemon juice

3 large beaten and stiffened egg whites

Mix together sugar and water in a small saucepan and heat until sugar is completely melted and the mixture is clear. Remove and chill for four hours.

In a large sized bowl, combine cooled sugar syrup, orange juice, lemon juice, zest and liqueur.

Mix completely, then fold in the egg whites. Continue folding until no white streaks are seen in the mixture. Pour mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze until firm. Serve and enjoy!

A very appealing way to display this lovely ice cream is to serve in a clear sundae dish or glass dish. This allows the ice cream to show itself off and beg your guests to try a bite.

Remember that this is a clone of one of Oprah's favorite recipes, it may not taste the same to you as the real Blood Orange Sorbetto. This is a way of allowing you to make it for your friends and family for a fraction of the cost.

It is always nice to know that you don't have to spend a fortune to "wow" your guests, by introducing them to the expensive The Blood Orange Sorbetto. Making this knock off recipe will make them all scream for more ice cream and they will never know the difference.
