Sessions: Democrats Failed to Act on Tax Cuts

Democrats End Legislative Session Without a Budget

In a statement issued on Friday (October 1, 2010), U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX32) criticized the Congressional Democratic majority for leaving Washington without acting on the nation's tax and spending issues.

"This week in Washington, members of the House of Representatives left town until November 15 without passing a budget for this year or taking any action to prevent one of the largest tax increases in American history," Session said. "Writing a budget is one of Congress' most basic fiscal responsibilities. For the first time since the 1974 Budget Act, this Democrat Majority has failed to produce an annual budget."

Sessions says Democrats have raised deficit spending without benefit to taxpayers. "Refusing a fiscal reality check or a blueprint to manage your tax dollars and $13 Trillion of debt, the Majority has instead chosen to give themselves a spending target and keep the money flowing at record levels. Around midnight on Wednesday, the House passed a 'Continuing Resolution,' which keeps the government running under last year's unprecedented spending levels until December 3, 2010."

Republicans have criticized Democrats for failing to extend the tax cuts instituted by President George W. Bush, which could have adverse effects on the struggling economy. "This failure in basic governance is compounded by the fact that the Majority has 'punted' another pressing issue: tax relief for American families and businesses. Without Congressional action, January 1 will bring a $3.8 Trillion tax hike that will affect every American who pays income taxes through higher tax rates on individuals, families, and small businesses," Sessions said. "Furthermore, uncertainty over future tax obligations is contributing to our nation's unemployment crisis. Clearly, Washington has failed to listen to the American people and job-creators by passing what they oppose and failing to complete essential tasks affecting the financial stability of our nation. It's time for new leadership in Washington."
