Set Up a Closet Installation Business Step by Step

From Beginning to Unlimited Potenial

Although this type of business does cost some overhead, some daring entrepreneurs have set up a closet installation business right out of their SUV. Here's some basic beginning know-how as a way to get started.

Tool Talk

If you already have the tools, then you are half-way there. Basic carpentry tools and power saws are a must. A set of collapsible horses are great for loading in and out of your vehicle. Supplies like nails, screws, drill bits and safety equipment are also part of your inventory. Use power tools as much as possible to cut down on hand fatigue.

Find a Supplier

Suppliers can be found on the Web, in the Yellow Pages and by word of mouth quite easily. Since closet installation is custom-made, you will be installing piece by piece, so make sure your supplier provides good, detailed instructions.

In your office you will need to run cost estimates based on what the customer has ordered. You supplier should supply you with a book or disc containing a price list with descriptions.

Find Clients

Promote yourself. Leave coupons in hardware stores. Go to home shows and offer a free closet for a smaller job. Have potential clients leave their names, phone numbers and addresses so you can send them a warm call or a postcard in the mail which advertises your services. You can make flyers and add them to a local newspaper, depending on your budget. Or simply rely on word of mouth if you don't have an advertising budget. Always take pictures of your work (before and after if possible) so that you have a portfolio to show potential clients.

After you drum up some business, you will need to visit the client's home to see exactly what they want. Sizes and colors should be determined from the beginning so you can order their product and provide quick customer service. You may then measure the space and take notes on the set-up of the closet with the client. Get back to them with an estimate within two to three business days at most. If not possible, call and leave a message and tell them when you will have their estimate. If you wait too long, the client may feel you are not interested in the job and they will choose someone else.

Get Your People

Gather your man power for installing the closet system, cutting pieces and carrying heavy loads into the house, along with basic assembly. Often there are stairs to consider, so ask the client ahead of time which door to go in and out of and let them know you will be wearing work shoes in their home. They may want to cover their carpeting.

Last Details

You may need to set up a delivery service (to be delivered to your personal work and storage place) coming from the warehouse supplier. You will then break down the orders and sort and separate each one for the individual homes. Don't forget basic office payroll books and software for invoices. If you have a small business with less than 10 people, then these details will be easy to keep track of. One helpful point of advice is to divide client folders into at least two sections: in-process and completed. Keep all notes, drawings and messages to and from the client in their folder for reference.

Setting up a closet installation business is not that difficult once all parts are in place. There's a demand for it so the market is open to anyone. The big businesses are not the only ones getting the work. So get out there and start building.
