Setting Up Your Home Office

Working at home can be a tricky venture, if you work at home, some sort of office or space of your own is paramount. Whether it is an actual room, a made over closet, or small corner in a larger space, it really need to make it your own space. However, having your 'own' space may be difficult if you have to share your office space and computer with someone else or even your whole family.

Think about the space that you want to use for your office and envision what it will be like all year around. If it is spring and you are setting up an office in the basement, think of what it will be like in the winter. Think outside of the box. It can be under a stair case or a closet or the end of a hall. As long as you have space for a desk and a chair, then you are ready to go. If you don't have a separate room, think about using a screen or a book case to separate your office from the rest of the room. Have a defined area for work and for home. Envision furniture placement and draw up a budget. Go shopping and purchase the desk that will fit ideally in your space. And don't forget the chair. If you will be working long hours in your home office, you will want to make sure your chair has good back support and is comfortable.

If you do not have a computer already you can expect to pay upwards of a thousand dollars for a good model. An average desk falls around two hundred dollars while a good, sturdy chair costs about one hundred and fifty. There are extras you might have to consider as well. You may need a filing cabinet to file customer orders, is there enough room? Don't forget about purchasing office supplies too. Remember to save all of your receipts when you make these purchases, you may be able to use them for tax deductions.

If you have to share your office space with other family members, how do you make sure the stuff that you need stays accessible? From pencils to papers, the key here is organization! Not unlike the corporate office, you will need to arrange the items you need daily in a neat and orderly fashion. Wicker baskets can be a great idea for this. Have a magnetic strip that you can post quick notes on and purchase pretty boxes or vases for things such as pens, markers, paper clips and elastic bands. Find a place where you can stash the extra supplies that you have and don't need on a daily basis. Plan on having shelves and perhaps even another chair to accommodate extra people if you plan to use your office for meetings. You must decorate your space to suit your own needs with the colors and pictures that you prefer.

If you are lucky enough to have your own office space with a door you can prohibit access during certain times or deny access all the time. Perhaps you can give your family a sign. For instance, if the door is open, it's ok to come and bug mom or dad, but if the door is closed, stay away unless it is an absolute emergency.

Setting up your own home office will take some creativity and time, but will be worth it in the long run. By making it as efficient as possible and take the time to organize it, you will have a well organized office that will save you energy and even money and may just be the best investment you ever made.
