Setting Up a Vacation Home

Getting Organized in a Second Home

Jan Peterson
Once you've invested in a vacation get-away, you've taken a giant step toward putting balance back into your life and you should be congratulated! Your next step is to get that vacation home in order so you can make an escape for a weekend!

A Vacation Home Should be a Retreat

You probably bought your cabin, beach cottage or other vacation home, because you were looking for a place to which you can regularly escape the pressures of everyday life. You were looking for that get-away retreat where you can reconnect with your spouse, family or just be by yourself. Your vacation home might be in the mountains, by the ocean, in some sunny desert climate, or even a tropical paradise.

You should remember these initial goals when setting up and decorating your new vacation home. Even though everyone wants to stay in touch with the outside world to some degree, every effort should be made to keep that interaction to a minimum. After all, how can you escape life's pressures if you take them with you?

Once the ink has dried on the purchase contract of that vacation home, you'll need to take care of the business of setting up your get-away; stocking it, making it functional, and creating a beautiful retreat. For a guide on how to do each of these things, visit these articles:

A cabin or beach home must function for your day to day needs, but as you are setting it up, don't forget that it should still feel like a vacation. It should be filled with fun, adventure and a relaxing ambiance so you can leave all your responsibilities and stress behind. And if you set up your vacation retreat adequately, you'll enjoy your new home so much you'll want to stay there often, instead of your favorite 5-Star resort!
