Concert to Raise Awareness on Global Warming
Rising average temperatures have already been affecting the environment. Some have observed changes already such as glaciers sinking, the break-up of ice on some rivers and lakes. The lengthening of seasons and the shift in animal and plant ranges. Global temperatures are expected to rise as human activities continue to add Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous-oxide and other green house gases to the atmosphere.
Did you know you release greenhouse gases as a result of using energy to drive? You use electricity, and other activities that support your quality of life like growing food, throwing away garbage. Whenever possible, buy and use permanent items instead of disposables. Instead of throwing away usable items, why not donate them to charities. Recycle paper, plastics and bottles. Take those items to a recycle center or find out if your community offers curbside collection. If your city doesn't already, find about getting your community started with one.
There are a few simple things we can do in our homes to help cut down on costs and help the environment in the process. Here are a few ideas. You can start off by changing five light bulbs in your home. The ones that you use most frequently are the best. Use one's labeled with "Energy Star", or fluorescent they use one-third less energy than an ordinary or incandescent light bulb uses. If every household in the U.S. made this one simple change then we would prevent more than one trillion pounds of greenhouse emissions.
Look for appliances marked with the "Energy Star" labels on them. Heat and Cool your home smartly. Make sure you seal up your home with better insulation and duct work. Make sure you have no visible cracks and gaps in your home. The use of "Green Power" is environmentally friendly electricity that is generated from renewable energy sources such as wind and the sun. Cleaning filters in your home such as on your furnace and air conditioner can save up to 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
Use water efficiently instead of watering your lawn everyday, try watering your lawn every two or three days.
Saving water consumption such as not running the water when you are brushing your teeth and shaving can cut down. Toilets that are leaking can waste about 200 gallons of water a day. It takes a lot of energy to heat water. You can use less hot water by installing a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of carbon dioxide saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year) instead of hot.
Car pool, whenever possible you will save time, energy and money. When you must drive, be sure to plan out your trip so you can run as many errands as possible, you save gas, money and time. Maintain your vehicle, including the air in your tires. A well maintained vehicle is a more efficient one. Avoid sudden starts and stops (they burn gas), and reduce your speed when you can. The faster you drive the more gas you burn per mile. Remember that the Earth is our home.

Great article, and I liked the concerts...awareness is critical, if we are to counter the head in the sand fictions coming from the right. Good job!
This article should have been on the front page this week. Miss your articles Dacia.
I really respect the work Al Gore is doing these days, and this sounds like a great awareness idea.
Your article is a good one. I think we need to take global warming very seriously before it is too late. This is the world we are leaving to our children and our grandchildren.
Great information. Just think khow much energy we culd save if we all worked from home. ;)
It would not surprise me at all that the reason the United States is doing very little about global warming is because they are searching out ways to use it as a weapon. We are currently involved in experiments to use weather as a weapon, as are Russia, England, and China. All the suggestions you mentioned are steps in the right direction to solve global warming before we go the way of the dinosaurs.
Sad that so many people believe Global Warming is just hogwash. The US government is behind the times as compared to other countries that are actively promoting alternatives to our oil consuming country.
