Seven Falls is located in the Bear Canyon section of Sabino Canyon. It is best visited during the spring, but the fall is another good time. After the mountains get any type of rain or snow, you can catch the river at its widest. In the midsummer, the river may be a little too low to provide the good swimming that it is known for. You can park in the Sabino Canyon parking lot near the Bear Canyon Visitor center. From here you can take the tram to the trailhead for a small fee, or you can walk the mile into the trailheads. The 30 minute walk is not difficult at all since there is a paved road for this section. Once you are at the trailheads, you can now choose your trail. There are several of these trails in the area and each of them is a great hike. The best of these is the Seven Falls Trail.
The Seven Falls hike is a total of about 7 miles from the parking lot to the base of the falls. It is a fairly simple hike as well. There are many children that make this hike from ages 9 and up. Once you start down the trail from the head, the trail is wide enough to easily fit two people. As you get down a little there are some narrow spots. There are one or two sections that you have to use stepping stones to cross a small creek, but this is still not difficult. Close to the falls, you will have to choose whether to take the more scenic route to the base of the falls, or the longer route to the top. There are swimming holes at both locations, so you will be able to relax and cool off no matter what your choice is. The base is much more beautiful and has a larger swimming hole with several spots to jump from the surrounding rocks.
Seven Falls is a great little hike that just about anyone can make. For those hot, Arizona days, a nice dip in the cool melted snow that pours down the falls is the perfect medicine. This little trek makes a great picnic place or a place to spend the day while getting away from everything.
