Seven Great Female Revenge Movies

(Ladies Getting Even...And Then Some!)

Ayanna Guyhto
The holidays are great for hunkering down in front of the big screen with friends and family. Cute, cuddly, feel-good films are typically the norm during festive times such as these. But when the ladies get together for holiday cocktails, sometimes the feelings aren't so warm and fuzzy. As the libations get tossed back, often the trash-talking male bashing begins. To accompany your festive tirades you'll need the appropriate backdrop. Here are a few great films that celebrate the power of womanhood, and ladies' uncanny ability to exact revenge!

Enough (PG-13, 2002)

Jennifer Lopez stars as Slim in this "fairly tame" tale of abuse and redemption. The story follows Slim as she and her little girl escape her tyrannical husband. But that is only where the action begins. Lopez' orchestrated punches and kicks will keep you and girlfriends entertained as you sip Cosmopolitan martinis.

Mortal Thoughts (R, 1991)

Mortal Thoughts will take you through an entertaining web of lies and betrayal. And at the root of it all is an abusive, pill-popping, coke-snorting loser by the name of Jimmy (Bruce Willis.) This "mystery-thriller" gives a whole new meaning to the concept, "Real Housewives of New Jersey."

The Color Purple (R, 1985)

Sometimes revenge is a dish best served cold. After enduring years of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her husband "Mister", Celie (played by Whoopi Goldberg) exacts the kind of revenge that takes eons of time to build. Observe the eyes of your party's divorcées'; they'll light up as they watch "Mister's" world collapse by the end of the film.

The Burning Bed (Made-for-TV, 1984)

If you can actually get your hands on this made-for-TV film, your guests will surely appreciate it. Starring the late Farrah Fawcett, this movie follows one abused woman's desperate (and fiery) resolution to ending her existence as a human punching bag.

What's Love Got to Do With It? (R, 1993)

Mega-star Tina Turner told her life story in this biopic starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. You and your fired-up BFF's can sing along with this whirlwind story of redemption and success.

I Spit on Your Grave (R, 1978)

This tale of revenge definitely isn't for the faint of heart. Jennifer (the main character) exacts brutal revenge on a gang of rapists in this hardcore 70's flick. You and your Lady Crew will definitely want to see this only after you've loosened up a bit.

Death Proof (R, 2007)

Quentin Tarantino does a great job of exploring the entertainment value of true Girl Power in this faux grind house flick. Watch your favorite female stars outsmart, outpunch, and out drive a crafty killer named Stuntman Mike. Watching Death Proof is a spirited way to put an end to your female revenge movie marathon.

Great picks. I've seen many of them on your list, and definitely want to check out the ones that I haven't seen.

It's great to see women these days quit falling down or fainting and instead getting up and beating some ole bad guy to a pulp. Or at least getting the last laugh, such as Tina Turner. I'd never heard of "Spit on Your Grave" but I got to say I love the title. "Enough" was great, and has become one of my favorites.
